<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.franson.com/gpsgate/' target='_blank'>http://www.franson.com/gpsgate/</a><br /><br /></div><i>"Franson Technology has released Franson GpsGate, a Windows and PocketPC utility that lets you run many GPS applications using a single GPS. You can create any number of virtual serial ports, simulate a GPS, and log and replay GPS data. Without Franson GpsGate, it's necessary to shut down one application before beginning another. With Franson GpsGate, you can share one GPS among several applications. Simply create additional virtual serial ports, and most NMEA-enabled GPS applications can connect to them."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/logsdon_20040404_gpsgate.gif" /><br /><br />Pretty cool, right? The software also features a built-in simulator - you input a series of waypoints, and GPSGate will simulate travel along that route. You also get data logging functionality and the ability to hook into USB devices and LANs. The <a href="http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&amp;jid=6A1658FF4DX939ED755FC2D57AF79BC1&amp;platformId=2&amp;productType=2&amp;productId=124411&amp;sectionId=0&amp;catalog=30&amp;topSectionId=-1">full version of the software is $29.95,</a> and you can pick up a 14-day trial for exactly no money at all. Now you'll just need to find a situation where you'd need to use your GPS with more than one program at the same time.

Hmm... okay I'm imagining driving in my car, using mapping/navigation software with some kind of GPS-enabled WiFi scanner running in the background (WiFiFoFum, MiniStumbler, etc.) Is this currently impossible without virtual serial ports?

A third concurrent use of GPS would be some kind of Today screen plugin that always shows your latitude and longitude. No idea if this even exists.

I have to admit, I have never used GPS with my PPC and this is the first I've heard that only one app can use it at a time. Nice to know there are ways around the limitation, though.

Please note that this same functionality will be built into WM2005 due later this year.
