I recently switched from a Sony Palm-OS pda to a PPC. Now, my favorite reader for palm was iSilo and naturally wish to use that in PPC (I know there's alternatives but theres some features of iSilo that I want on PPC).

I have some books saved up onto my palm based pda and would like to beam it over to the PPC. Is that possible considering they are both using the same isilo convertor?

In addition, I cant seem to beam anything from my palm based pda to my PPC. I know its different OS and technically shouldnt be able to transfer files like this. But I've asked previously and ppl told me you can still beam stuff from the palm based pda to the ppc (i.e. contacts and stuff).

Thanks.

iSilo is also available on the Pocket PC. Version 4.25 (at the time of writing) can be downloaded from here. (http://www.isilo.com/download/iSiloPPC.htm)

Most iSilo books that display fine on the Palm should display fine on the Pocket PC. I have a number of iSilo books which have been designated as Palm-compatible, but work without problems on the Pocket PC. Give it a go, and I'm sure that 99% of the time, it will display on your Pocket PC.

In some cases, it can be done. Simply align the ports and beam it over. However, I'm not sure which Pocket PC you have so I can't state whether it will work or not. Worst case scenario: you can try Peacemaker. (http://www.conduits.com/products/peacemaker/)

I just got a PPC and had a ton of references in iSilo format--some over 50MB in size. I'm trying the PPC version now and so far, everything is readable on my Axim. Even better, the news feeds will import directly into ActiveSync for regular updates. This is one of many apps whose data transfers directly from Palm to PPC. Beik's dictionaries and Olive Tree Bible/reference files also move directly over to their PPC readers.

Mobipocket doe as well and even opens a lot of ereader books.
Oh that reminds me, ereader too.

Surprised at the ease of use and versatility of PPCs yet?

I can't speak for others, but the versatility does surprise me. This is especially true in connectivity across the board. However, I'm still struggling with ease of use. After six years of Palm OS use, it takes some adjustment to achieve comfort with a different mindset. Launchers in the Palm sense with any real power don't exist in PPC world. The Today screen occupies the PPC universe center. That's not better or worse, just different. Apps like spbPocketPlus ease the pain somewhat.

The WM2003/2005 OS has far greater potential for the future than Palm OS 5 or 6. If PalmSource leverages its Linux acquisitions properly, they could still give PPC a run. I mention that in my article on MobileTechReview.

I am enjoying learning the new platform. Haven't made any rash decisions yet, though.
