View Full Version : PIE dropping pages, PC remote control via PPC?

Hi again - I've successfully posted on here before whereby I was trying
to get a sort of Wifi functionality without the extra h/w - wireless
router or whatever.... [I know - cheapskate!]

In 'Loox720 & FjS Lifebook S6120, Bluetooth network access', with your
help, I managed to get bluetooth access from my PPC, using ActiveSync &
DeskTop Passthru accessing the ADSL broadband facilites available to my
laptop [in a different room], utilising also ICS/ Internet Connection
Sharing on the PC. So I can now happily search the web, using PIE on my
PPC, bringing pages in on the super fast broadband connection - just
like wifi.

This is mostly wonderful, but I do get the odd

"The requested page cannot be found"

or similar, on certain pages, that I can later repeat, when it will then
work. I've not actually spotted any pattern to this as yet, & can't say
that I know what's causing it.. [weak BT signal, PIE limitations etc].

However, in order to circumvent it, I wondered if it would be possible
to link my PPC to the PC [wirelessly obviously!], & utilise any
combination of bluetooth, wifi, Terminal Services, VNC etc. to allow me
to remote control the laptop - the theory being that the laptop has a
much better hit rate on displaying the reqd web pages.

I've had a bash at configuring a bluetooth link via BT Mgr | Connect to
a network etc, & I now have a shortcut called 'Internet via <laptop>,
the properties of which show my laptop & correct MAC address, but on
trying to connect, it simply hangs.

I have vxutil which shows that My PPC's IP address is 192.168.55.101, &
I have now declared my laptop as 192.168.55.102 paired with the MAC
address as known above.

Still no luck! Anyone any idea re the not being able to display various
pages issue, or how how I could use BT/Wifi/TS/VNC etc to overcome the
problem.

TIA! Mark.

Wohay - Searching back issues..

'VNC and Active Sync & Bluetooth' sounds promising & points to

I'll give it a go!

Following the above :

~ On the PPC -

1.Turned PPC BT+AS on & selected Settings tab;
2.Selected Services tab|Personal Network Server, & ensured
that Service Settings are as indicated [Just 'Enable
Service' selected];
3.Start|Settings|Connections|Network cards & selected Work/
Bt PAN User Driver, & allocated the IP addrs of
192.168.0.2 with mask = 255.255.255.0.
4.Tapped ok, & soft reset the PPC.
5.vxutil confirms.

~ On the PC

1.NDUC|BT Network|Props|TCP|Props = 192.168.0.1, mask as
above.
2.ipconfig confirms.
3.BT icon in the Sys Tray|Explore|View devices in range|
d-click
4.Options are Audio Gateway/ BT Serial port/ DUN/
Network access/ OBEX File xfer/ OBEX object push;
5.Best option = Network access..
Connecting network access on macppc -
.. The network access connection failed - could not
connect to the remote device ..

NB. ActiveSync over Bluetooth does work, & I have this
running whilst trying to achieve the above.

The file xfer service between the two works ok.

I cannot ping the PPC[192.168.0.2] from the PC, &
I cannot ping the PC[192.168.0.1] from the PPC.

I'll continue searching the forums - any help very
gratefully appreciated! Mark.

May I suggest buying an adsl modem/wifi access point. Bluetooth netowrking it voodoo at best. You can get one for about £60 at the cheapest.

Thanks for that - The appeal of what I was trying was that no extra hardware was required - will definitely consider though.

The latest with the remote control, is that I'd got the devices able to ping each other by configuring from the 'PDA side', & not from the 'PC side' [as earlier instructions indicated]. I used Bluetooth Connection Wizard with 'Join a Personal Network', & this now allows me to form the network, with either end being able to ping the other.

I now have a VNC server running on the laptop, but when I start up the VNC client on the PDA nothing seems to happen - the program just 'disappears' without prompting for the pass key. I've seen this referenced elsewhere & the comments suggested that the prompt was hidden behind other apps on the PDA screen. However, collapsing all such apps does not reveal it lurking anywhere near! I'm running WinVnc 3.3.6 on the PC, & VncView.Exe [pocketpcfreewares.com] 1.01 on the PDA.

I will probably try a different version of the VNC software next.. Cheers, Mark.
