i'm looking to buy one (pocket pc) around june and i was wondering about few things:
1.) WiFi, i need something that's wifi capable
question: how often is it to find a wifi area?
2. i need something that can allow me to add programs and is moddable, since i want to listen to mp3's and watch videos on it
3.) something with a decent battery life (but if its a good player with lots of features it can make up for the battery life)
4.) what's bluetooth and what can i do with it?
5.) what's better? a phone ppc or a non-phone ppc?
6.) should i wait to get something that's 2005 mobile or no?
and lastly, which ppc would you suggest for me (one that has what i need above and has lots of useful features)?
thx

If you are going to wait till June you may as well wait for WM2005, and not have to wait months and possibly forever for an OS upgrade.
BTW, you have not provided enough information to suggest a device. You need to specify:
1) Budget (very important!)
2) Location.
3) Size preference.
4) level of experience, and what existing devices you own (e.g. mp3 player etc)
5) occupation
You did specify your:
1) intended use
2) battery life preference
3) whether you are open to a phone edition device
which is very good, but to really give good advice we need a bit more.
BTW the best all round high-end pocketpc (http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/vga-comparing-en.shtml) is the FSC Loox 720 (http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/fs-loox720-en.shtml), but your other priorities may dictate a different device.

diabloii, here is a suggestion for you:
buy a used budget model and use for 1-2 months. this way you will be learn the aspects of windows mobile world and will be able to answer your questions yourself
after this period you can sell the device and maybe you wont use a dime and will buy the exect device for your needs
i agree with surur that loox 720 is a killer device but no body can give you advise about a device will fit your needs perfectly

1) Budget (very important!)
around $400, but ofcourse, that can always be raised if the ppc is worth the price
2) Location.
south california
3) Size preference.
one that can fit into my pocket
4) level of experience, and what existing devices you own (e.g. mp3 player etc)
even though i don't own an mp3, i can probably know more about it than most people; i'm pretty skilled with the computer and i don't think i'll have problems with anything
5) occupation
student (freshman@high school)
are there upcoming ppc's to look forward to and how does the loox compare to dell's x50v and HP's line of ppc's
thx

If you only have 400 US$ at most, then, the x50v is the way to go IMHO. Nevertheless, if you really want to know everything about current high-end VGA devices, check out the links at http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=38827

Reasons:
1) Has wifi and bluetooth
2) very good with video, some special video games are being made for the video accelerator.
3) Battery life so, so, extended battery life available.
4) In budget
5) available in USA (the loox is european and costs >500-600)
6) Pretty high-end for the price.
7) As a student you are probably surrounded by wifi, and could use skype for free calls. Pocketpc-phones are a lot more expensive.
8 ) As a student you probably have baggy pants and big pockets :) so the size should not be a concern.
For your purposed bluetooth would be useful for use with bluetooth keyboards and mice, turning your pocketpc into a mini laptop. If you have a bluetooth cellphone (unlikely in the USA ;) ) you could access the internet via your mobile phone out of wifi coverage areas.

thx for the responses
"If you have a bluetooth cellphone (unlikely in the USA Wink ) you could access the internet via your mobile phone out of wifi coverage areas."
is that internet free?
also, what are the advantages of the loox over the dell (i COULD afford it, but if it doesn't have a lot of useful features, i don't think i'll need it)
but skype is only for contacting another person with skype?? or can i also use skype to dial phone numbers?
oh, and what games are available (the popular ones) with the x50v?
thx

I believe t-mobile had some good deals, but you will need to wait for an american to respond. In UK internet access over a mobile phone is prohibitively expensive, but I believe its very much cheaper in USA.

If you follow the links above you can see pocketpc's compared. They are broadly similar, but for you I believe the video accelerator outweighs the USB host and 128Mb memory. Especially useful to you would be the ability to watch video encoded at high bitrate for a desktop pc on your pocketpc, which the Dell excels at. For more experienced users the ability to expand a pocketpc with USB peripherals (which the dell cant easily do), the 128Mb ram vs 64Mb, the much longer battery life, the conservative styling and slim size, and the jog dial all make it the top ppc. (I'm probably making a pile of assumptions about you, but then I was a student once, and I know which one I would have preferred then).
but skype is only for contacting another person with skype?? or can i also use skype to dial phone numbers?
These days you can also get skype in and out, allowing you to dial (for a fee) land-line numbers, and also to receive (for a small fee) phone calls from outside.
oh, and what games are available (the popular ones) with the x50v?
I'm not a gamer, but ppc gaming it a whole different kettle of fish from normal desktop and console games.

(That's for the graphic, not anything against Dell. I'm actually kind of wishing I had gone the X50v route right now.)

In the US,
T-mobile $20 unlimited GPRS (add to voice plan)
T-mobile $30 unlimited GPRS (no voice plan)
Cingular $40 unlimited GPRS/EDGE (after sign-up, call them to remove "PPU", they'll know what you mean, even if you don't)
