I used this program for a while and I really liked it at first, but I ran into a lot of problems down the road. For one it was a huge memory hog and slowed down my SX66, for another it started getting lots of errors when checking my gmail. It would crash on me frequently and was not saving emails so I had to uninstall it. Checking my email with the default Messaging program takes a few more clicks but it runs so much faster and doesn't crash. I certainly wouldn't shell out 25 bucks for this before you give it a thorough test drive.

I've never liked it myself. It seems to be a bit primitive to me. I can even get hotmail with the built in mail program now. This program still doesn't. It wouldn't even take my login name for my smartphonethoughts email account!! Too much hassle. Deleted and forgotten.

The SSL support is still very shaky in this version. It still does not work with my work email system. It takes lots of memory to install and for some strange reason the email databases are HUGE! How can storing 23K of plain text email take up 1345k?? Dunno. And it's still horribly slow.

I just use nPop for none ssl email and pocket inbox for the rest.

Wow! Only negative reaction. I admit, the past is pretty dark as far as reliability. But things are improving. And it looks great.

The main reason why I gave up on POutlook was because it was so slow to connect and authenticate. That and the fact that I couldnt use different credentials for my pop server and smtp server. (Atleast I couldnt figure out a way). Of course now that I can, I run the risk of the recipient's spam filters chewing up my message.

I then moved onto nPopw. But it was great and all but I got tired of having to figure out what line to put into the ini file to make something work.

I then went to WebIs Mail. I agree that it had (has) issues, but I'm currently putting 2.1 through the motions and so far its okay. The ssl piece does still seems to be an issue.

I don't have a hotmail account so thats not an issue for me.

The reliability has certainly increased.

Right now I m using ProfiMail (http://www.lonelycatgames.com/mobile/profimail/profimail.html) and it handles HTML messages w/aplomb. I had both ProfiMail and WebIs Mail 2.1 installed on my Loox 720 and without a doubt ProfiMail performed faster than WebIs Mail in all areas. I finally deleted WebIs Mail off my PDA when I found that I had to load in each image in my HTML mail manually (one at a time via a tap and hold menu). I don't have time for that. Once you get past the CellPhone style interface, ProfiMail is worth every penny and is very stable.

Do you know if it works with an exchange server account?

Thanks

thanos255 no I don't know if ProfiMail works with an exchange account. I only use it with POP3 and IMAP accounts. You can download it and test it out for yourself. The trial is fully functional.

Straight from the horse's (ie, WebIS's) mouth:

Some of the great features of Mail include... read only HTML support (no images to keep bandwidth low)

So I assume this feature is intended more for users who pay by the MB. But an option to automatically display images or not would have been nice. Same goes for GMail, though.

That's a feature of WebIS Mail I dislike too, I think you should have the option to either download or not download images automatically. But still this is no reason for me to abandon WebIS Mail.

I had both ProfiMail and WebIs Mail 2.1 installed on my Loox 720 and without a doubt ProfiMail performed faster than WebIs Mail in all areas.

ProfiMail makes a big difference for those of us with sparse RAM (32M), many programs installed, in addition to the need to keep multiple programs open in order to save time switching back and forth. While WebIS Mail 2.1 takes my PDA a little over 15 seconds to open (installed on a SD card), ProfiMail opens almost instantly. Users will find ProfiMail's interface a little clunky and unintuitive. However, when the real issue comes down to speed and space, ProfiMail wins.

(I'll still consider switching back to WebIS Mail if they work on the speed and space issues.)

Hi Ceskins and others,
I've been using Webismail since the beginnen and I like it and I hate it so I tried ProfiMail. Great program :D but there is one very important thing missing :( : When you download your mail it will download only the subject. When you then tap this mail it will start download the whole mail which are in my case sometimes very very big. As far as I can see there is no way in the program to only let it download the first 2 or 3Kb of each mail. This is what this program is realy missing.
Anybody knows how to solve this?

wouterk I don't see an option to limit the amount of the message downloaded but you can disable loading of images automatically when the message is opened to limit the download size. I would e-mail the developer and request this feature be added. Since I connect to my e-mail via WiFi and my e-mails are small, I never missed this feature. However I did use it when I relied on the PPC built-in Inbox app to check my IMAP account.

BTW, if you use Tweaks2K2.net force VGA hack, you can run ProfiMail and ProfiExplorer in true VGA mode.

Hi CESkins,
Thanks for your reply and tip. I applied your tip and I already mailed to the developer. Now it is time to wait for his answer...

I had been having problems with using Secure Authentication in WebIS Mail. (Read: I wouldn't work). I would continually as me to reenter username and password and never actually connect.

I sent an email to the support guys and they gave me a prompt response. They openned a ticket. Today I got another email saying that it was resolved and it should be in the next release.

I haven't looked at 2.1 either.

I had severe problems with earlier versions of WebIS Mail, including a repeatable complete lockup of my iPaq 5550.

Then I got the free copy of WebIS Mail 2.06 when it was on Handango a while ago but while I could receive mail it wouldn't send. There were a number of other folk in the same boat, but the problem was never resolved. Inbox was able to send with identical settings.

The only thing that the built in client (Inbox) doesn't do for me is display the overall size of an email before you mark it for download. You have no way of knowing if the image has a huge attachment that will eat up your GPRS allowance for the month! Otherwise I am perfectly happy with it.

Less than an hour ago, I was looking at my Start Menu and I asked myself: "Why do I still have Inbox on the Start Menu, when WebIS Mail does so much more?"
