I still keep a Hotmail and Yahoo accounts for "legacy" reasons, but I would like to do away with them. My usual routine is to logon to them once every couple of days, but I would like to stop doing that entirely.

I've seen some programs that will allow you to "pop" Hotmail and Yahoo so you can download emails like you would a standard pop3 account. However, with Hotmail's recent change to their system, I don't know if the programs I had in mind would work.

Does anyone know good programs that will pop either or preferably, both Hotmail and Yahoo so I can download my mail?

Yahoo charges extra for the ability to access your mail via Pop, but Outlook and Pocket Outlook handle it ok.

Microsoft had threatened to start charging for Hotmail Pop access, but I haven't seen that happen yet - and again, Outlook works just fine (I don't know about Pocket Outlook).

I was under the impression that POP3 access to Hotmail requires payment. If it doesn't, can you tell me what the POP3 server is for Hotmail?

Hotmail doesn't support PoP3. What the pay service does is allow you to use Outlook to retrive your Hotmail/http mail. Outlook (2002 and better) has an HTTP mail capability built in already, and until recently you were able to use that for free with your free account. The fee for using Outlook to access HotMail also bumps you up to a 2G mailbox.

What I'm saying is you cannot access HTTP mail, HotMail or any other, with a PoP3 client. There are a number methods in which you can get around this. One puts a sort of proxy in the middle, retrieving the Http mail for you from the server and delivering it to you PoP3. It's a translator of sorts. The other is to add an Http mail client to your PoP3 mail client. HttpMail does that for the PPC Inbox, though I have not tried it since Hotmail went to the fee system.

Re: Hotmail POP

I've been able to use Outlook ? to access my girlfriend's Hotmail account at home without upgrading to a paying account. I don't have the info here at the office, so I'll have to look it up and post it in a day or 2.

Re: Hotmail

I'm still able to access Hotmail (without paying extra) using Outlook 2003's built-in ability to do HTML email. The "server" it's using is http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
