My 18-month old iPAQ 2210 recently began refusing to recognize my memory cards. The CF card it recognizes intermittently, the SD card not at all. I've checked both cards on my lap-top and they seem fine except that all the data has been erased from both (except for one text file on the CF card). I've tried reformatting both on the laptop, but still with the same result on the PPC----at the moment neither are being recognized. When I insert the CF card, I get an error msg saying "Unknown card in socket 1" and when I insert the SD card, I don't even get an error msg.

Later: The problem is definitely with the iPAQ rather than with the cards. I just tried putting a different CF card in. It recognized it after a soft reset. But once I took it out and put it back in again---then no recognition, plus the card had been wiped clean!! My laptop read it as unformatted.

All this has made me wonder also about the iPAQ File StoreIt currently shows 3.84MB free with 0.00 MB in use. But I thought I used to have more memory there. Does 3.84MB sound correct?

Where do I go next?!?

Have you tried backing up the iPAQ then doing a hard reset to see if it's a software problem? If it's not recognizing them after a hard reset, there's likely a problem with the card slots...but to have both go at the same time would be rather strange. :?

Definitely, it's exactly 3.84MBytes, just checked on mine.

It does - a lot of (mostly) empty directories; all in all, it only takes some 10k-20k.

Good---at least I don't have to worry about that! Many thanks!

That was going to be my next step, unless someone suggested something more specific. I think you are right that it is more likely a software rather than a hardware problem.

Are there any memory eating viruses out there that target 2003CE?

I need to do a ROM-update---might that take care of the possible software corruption?

No, and yes. :-)
