View Full Version : Best way to "clone" a PPC?

I need something for personal use (not company wide) I want to start doing the following.

Make a system backup before loading another app.

It can be either backup based or something "ghostish" but needs to be reasonably priced.

What I want to have to eliminate is a full PPC reload due to one app loading funky on the PPC causing it to crash. I figure I can run the backup just before the load test the new app and ensure its working right then rinse and repeat.

Anyone with thoughts on personal PPC backup software?

If you want to clone a PPC, I've worked with Sprite Clone:
http://www.spritesoftware.com/products/sprite_clone.html

There is a trail version that might do what you need.

Otherwise, for complete backups, use Sprite Backup. I've hard reset my PPC and restored with SB without the slightest problem.

Can't go wrong with either of these.

Extract PPC DNA and inject it into a Palm embryo. (Sorry, the Devil made me do it)

You can also give a try to Spb Clone ( http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/clone/?en ). Of course, that's not a real backup/restore app and is mainly meant for enterprise users (and priced accordingly).

I will also chime in for Sprite! By the way, the Sprite people are the ones that originally brought us Ghost!

I'll have to look into Sprite then. Nice piece of information about them being the ones to orignally do the Ghost. I hope they are not responsible for the latest bloatware releases that are like Ghost 2003! I stoped upgrading our Corperate Ghost versions once they hit 8.0. With 2003 and the application being a forced install onto a PC is insane. I like the old 1-2 floppy disk approach. much easier and IMHO much more versatile.

Whats the difference between clone and backup within sprite if they both restore the PPC to their original configuration? Anyone able to give me a quick rundown their site is kinda convoluted without alot of info I would like to have seen.

I think it is the same distinction it would be for desktop systems. A backup is designed to restore your PPC to a previous state. A clone process is designed to install a standardized state to multiple PPCs. I would expect that automated naming, and personalization (corporatization?) and such would be scriptable with a clone product.

For what you indicated, Sprite's backup is likely the appropriate solution.
