Revenue increased to $91 million from $63 million a year ago."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2005/20050202-mobdevprofit.gif" /><br /><br />The top chart shows revenues, which are up in the second quarter just over 44%. The division came very close to breaking even, losing $4 million compared with $110 million in the same quarter last year. So far this year (Microsoft's year is July 04-June 05) the division has sold $160 million with a net loss of $24 million.<br /><br />Note that this is not just Pocket PC and Smartphone. This includes revenues from sales of Windows CE to embedded device/system developers and I think it also includes the Streets &amp; Trips group, which used to be part of MSN several years ago. It is still good news, but it is impossible to see from the data given what sales and profits are from just what you and I consider the Windows Mobile product line.

Never quite heard a NOL referred to as a surge in profits. Man, talk about turning lemons into lemonade.

To me, the most interesting data in the charts is that the Windows XP and Office products are "carrying" the rest of the company with their obscene 75% gross margins. 8O

It is those "obscene" margins that allow them to throw money away at money losers like... uhm.. Windows Mobile until they get profitable.

Captialism. I truly love it!

I'm afraid that's not capitalism Ed (at least not within Microsoft itself):
From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.
