Aloha All!

May I please have your suggestions for what might be one of the better applications or ways to access my desktop remotely via my PPC? I am relatively new to the PPC and with so many options out there, I don't know what I should be looking for.

Thanks!
Liana

Liana,

Welcome!

Most PDA's come with a Terminal Services client installed so you could try that first. This should work fine if want to use your pda to control a desktop pc while at home on your LAN.

For remote access to your desktop pc while using your pda away from home, such as at a friends house or wireless hotspot, I would recommend using a solution available at http://www.logmein.com

You install the remote control software on your desktop and then access that pc through the LogMeIn site in Pocket Internet Explorer. You can also access your desktop pc from any pc connected to the internet.

Hope this helps.

Can you post how to set up/configure the Terminal Services client?

Thanks.

Here is a great article on how to use Windows XP Remote Desktop and a Pocket PC.

Check it out. (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bridgman_02june10.mspx)

This should get you going!

Glad I could be of help! One thing the article doesn't mention is how to enable Remote Desktop on Windows XP so you can connect to it.

The article here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx) should help you get that configured.

If you want to connect remtoely to a pc that is running Windows XP Home or an earlier verion of Windows, I would recommend going to www.logmein.com and setting up an account there.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that they have both a free and pro version. I am using the free version and currently have 5 computers on my account that I maintain remotely for friends and family.

It works very well and once you log into the site, you can control your computers from any computer or PPC connected to the net.

I see that I'll need a static IP address if I'm wanting to connect to my home pc and going through a linksys router. Does that sound correct? I just want to be sure I understand.

Thanks again.

Well it depends if you are talking about a static IP address for your WAN (Public IP side) or for the computer you are going to connect to behind your router.

You don't need a static Public IP address to make it work when connecting from the outside. It would make things easier, since you would always know what to put in for an IP address when connecting from a hotspot or outside network. However, most people using Cable or DSL receive their IP address via DHCP from their Internet Service Provider and it is constantly changing. If you get your Public IP using DHCP, you are going to have to know what it is before you leave the house. To find out your Public IP, you can go to www.whatismyip.com or www.ipchicken.com

But you should assign a static IP address on the network card for the computer running Remote Desktop. The reason for this is that you are going to have to create a rule on your router to forward requests on port 3389 to your desktop. And if your desktop is set up to get it's IP address via DHCP from the router, then you would have to change the rule constantly.

That's why I recommend using LogMeIn. It offers secure remote access, you don't have to configure anything on your router and your computer will be accessible from the website as long as the LogMeIn software is running and it is connected to the internet.

Good luck! :D
