I thought I'd post this new app I wrote here to see if any one was interested in this kind of thing.

http://www.aspecto-software.com/WiFiTunes/WiFiTunes.htm

This project started primarily as a proof of concepy and is still very much still work in progress. This application will discover via Rendezvous any iTunes running on Macs or PCs on your local network and allow you to browse the library or playlist and then stream MP3s directly to your PDA. Example uses include connecting your PDA headphone jack into a stereo in another room in your house (I have mine streaming music to the bathroom).

Hey this program looks really nice, what a great idea! I have a very large iTunes library on the computer in my living room, but often like to listen to a few songs in my bedroom, and this would be a very ideal situation. About half of my library is MP3 and half is AAC (with a lot of iTunes protected files) so I'd be able to listen to a decent chunk of my music now, and maybe all of it in the future. Keep up the good work indiekiduk, this is awesome!

Yep I didnt even think about the AAC problem until I tried to stream some music from my friends mac. I'm really interested in trying to get AAC files playing since I guess I'll be using them more once my mac mini arrives. As for protected AAC I dunno if it will be possible to play them at all.

I installed the .Net compact framework on my iPaq running Pocket PC 2002, but don't see how to install the WiFi tunes application. I can open the .cab file with WinZip but what do I do with the 7 files?

Thanks

Put the .cab file on your device and open it there, it will install the app...

You aren't meant to extract the file you downloaded. It itself is already a CAB file. Download it from the link provided in the thread, and stick it on your Pocket PC, then open it using File Explorer, or CabInstl, or something similar. That will install it.

Hi,

will it be possible to use this software as a remote control to the iTunes running in the PC, so you can control what is being streamed to your Airport Express?

Apart from using it to stream to the Pocket PC, it could also be used as a remote acces to what's playing in the PC.

BR,

Pedro.

You would probably appreciate a piece of software called PPC Tablet. (http://www.amorphous-media.com/) That allows you to control your PC remotely from your Pocket PC - I've also made an iTunes profile which you can download from their site. Alternatively, you may want to give Terminal Services Client a go.

Ok. What you need to do is this:
copy the CAB file into a folder on your PPC. Use file explorer to open the CAB file. This will install the program. You should now have a WiFiTunes icon in your Programs screen.
On your PC run iTunes. Go to Edit->Preferences and choose the Sharing tab. Share your Library or Playlists.
On your PPC run WiFiTunes. You should now see your PC in the drop down list in the upper left. Select this.
If you still don't see your PC then you need to do some trouble shooting to see if your PPC can reach your PC wirelessly. Make sure that there isn't a firewall blocking your PPC from getting to your PC. Try downloading something like Pocket Ping and ping the IP address of your PC to see if you can reach it from your PPC.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Graham

I like the idea of this program. Others have questioned it use, but if you don't have a hardware solution, like myself, this would help you extend your PC based music library without having to buy extra hardware. Just plug your PPC into your stereo or walk around in your wireless covered area and you have full extended access to your music.

That said WiFiTunes in its current form is VERY basic. There are none of the standard music player functions like Stop, Play, Pause, Backward, Forward and nothing to turn off the screen or stop the unit turning itself off when running on batteries. It also doesn't seem to go on to the next song after playing the selected song so you have to keep tapping on each song to play it.

I find it very frustrating to be listening to a song and then have the unit turn itself off in the middle or to have to keep clicking on the next song, but this is an Alpha version product so I guess these things are to be expected. I'm interested to see where they take this product.

Cheers,
Graham

Good work on this program! As Janak suggested, submit it to news and we'll do up a front page post all pretty-like ;)

Can someone help me with this ?

I have installed Wifi Tunes on a Pocket PC running Windows 2003 CE, and I have enabled sharing of my Itunes music library on my PC.

I am able to view the playlists, files etc. from my Pocket PC. However, when I click on the filenames nothing seems to play.

In the case of music I have purchased through ITunes, nothing happens at all. In the case of other mp3s in my library I get an errror message saying "unusual error during receive".

Does anyone have any ideas why this isn't working ?

indiekiduk or anyone else - I downloaded the cab file to my pc desktop, transferred it to my pocket pc, and then attempted to open it. I got a window that says: Setup Failed. The file "\My Documents\WiFiTunes_v0.2.CAB" is not a valid Windows CE setup file.

Nevermind everyone. I downloaded it again and it worked this time. Corrupt download the first time perhaps.

Once I installed the .NET Framework on my Axim, everything worked great. This is an awesome product. Thanks!

I downloaded and installed the new v0.4.1 successfully, but when the program tries to download the playlist from iTunes on the PC, I keep getting a memory shortage error on the ppc (Dell Axim X30). It tells me to shut down any of the running programs (wifitunes is the only one running) or increase program memory. I tried moving the memory "slider" to increase program memory (and decrease storage memory), but I still got the same error. I did not have this problem with an earlier version of wifitunes that I used. Anyone else have this problem? Any thoughts?
