Motorola MPx Available Via Singapore Retailer

If you're willing to overlook the 32MB and really are interested in the unit, here's the opportunity to get your early hands on it. <br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/mtop_m-mpx.jpg" /><br /><br />What's particularly interesting is the cost: it's listed for $869US. That's not cheap, but it's not <i>extremely</i> expensive considering that it's an early international release and is an unlocked price. (For comparison, when the Ericsson T68 first came out, us Northern Americans could only import it from Europe for the massive price tag of $450US.) This price strongly suggests that if a local carrier were to sell the MPx, it would be much cheaper, and the early rumors of the MPx costing at least $800 would be unfounded. It's certainly a situation worth watching -- I'd like to think Motorola'll have to price it aggressively to move an increasingly-outdated 32MB Pocket PC. :?

Old news --- weak and old technology! tripple yawn! I have move on a long time ago.

I had one briefly but sold it. Not because its old technology, but because GSM just isn't as good as CDMA in my area.

But the device itself is really solid. The clamshell works really well and is the only PDA phone other than the Treo 6xx that is a really usable phone. Its very solidly built, not cheap. So I really woldn't consider it "old" technoloy. That flip is just too cool. If Motorola had put 64MB of memory in, they would sell this like crazy. Maybe a faster processor or VGA too, but even that wasn't really a problem - it was that damn 12MB of available memory. Too much work to keep it running efficiently.

Considering how much PocketPC OS leaks memory as it is (e.g., if you visited more than 8 web pages between soft resets, you ran out of memory) its beyond me how Motorola could even consider releasing it with only 12MB of free RAM. I'm not even talking about loading apps. Just using it as a phone and web browser would kill your memory quickly if you didn't watch things. Its really puzzling what Motorola was thinking or how they field tested this thing when they decided to go with the 32MB (again, only 12MB available). Curious...

I agree; but the problem is that Moto doesn't see this as a PPC. They se it as a phone with advanced features. 32MB in a phone isn't bad, especially if you have storage capacity in an SD card. The MPx isn't just a phone though. Its a Pocket PC, with all the capabilities of both a phone AND a Pocket PC.

Getting someone who can effect change in the Moto Pro Group to understand this, however, is proving to be challenging...

It appears that Motorola is limited in memory by something other than things like price of memory. I believe it may be a current hardware limitation of some sort. I also believe that Motorola believes this to be a phone first, PDA second. As a phone, it has much more memory than do any other traditional smartphone. If I were to have one of these, I would use it like I do my current phone, as a phone first and as a wireless modem to my super PDA. I would basically carry a cutting edge Pocket PC for heavy duty PDA tasks, and the MPx as a phone. When I had to be with only one device, I would just carry the MPx and have a phone with better than average smartphone features. I still want one.

I've been talking with them on and off since November. They have totally side stepped this issue. They refuse to answer my questions about the technical specs of the unit, including memory configuration. right now, I think that ths configured as a traditional PPC... but not having seen a production unit, I'm not entirely certain that's accurate, either.
