View Full Version : UK SD/CF cards?

I currently have a 512MB SD card and 1GB CF card. At the time, they collectively took the total cost of my PPC to more than many of today's full desktops! But I'm seriously considering increasing my storage capacity. My new Wikipedia alone wants 511MB ;) . Can any UK users save me some research time please? Any competitive sources of 1GB SD and/or 2GB CF cards? And any hard evidence of any brands to avoid?

Try this place Click Here (http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=111582)

I find them competitive and fast.

Hi,

it's a while since I've bought any, but www.ebuyer.co.uk used to be pretty cheap.

Hi Hal

I recently got a lexar 2gb 80x compact flash and I'm impressed with the perfomance on my hx4700.

Both Dabs and ebuyer are curently out of stock.
http://www.valuemedia.co.uk - might be worth a look.

Cheers David

I've found http://www.aria.co.uk pretty cheap - max 1 gig CF though.

(Glad you got the Wikipedia working properly)

Tim

Thanks all - following those pointers up today.

Timbur: Yep - posted the happy conclusion in Pocket PC Thoughts Forum Index -> eBooks on Monday.

You could also look at Clove.

Thanks, yes, Clove are offering
CF Card WA - 2Gb (CF-2GB) £120 (£141 inc VAT)
CF Card WA - 4Gb (CF-4GB) £229 (£269.08 inc VAT)
which are pretty keely priced.

Suppose I decided to risk bankruptcy (if not divorce!) by going for 4GB? At the first site I found
http://www.epcbuyer.com/products.asp?recnumber=2052
I see this:

"It is important to note that cards greater than 2 GB can only be used in cameras that support the FAT32 file system."

The site seems unaware of PPCs, only cameras. What is the implication of this warning (if any) for a PPC, supported by an XP PC that uses NTFS, not FAT32?

My iPaq 5550 is happy with SD/CF cards formatted with either FAT or FAT32. The Filesystem that your XP computer has won't matter, if you have a card reader on the PC you will be able to format the card with either FAT or FAT32.

The PPC doesn't seem to mind either!

Thanks for the fast reply. I don't think I've ever had to consider this issue before. With both my CF and SD card, I just popped them in and they worked. But then they aren't over 2GB, which apparently seems to be some critical threshold.

I've just had my 1Gb one delivered from Aria.co.uk - 50 pound inc.delivery from their specials page.

Note: transfer rates in my usb2 card reader device on this new Aria SD card are way faster than on the DaneElect 512mb SD card I got from Expansys.com :)
