The good news is that the Motorola’s MPx Pocket PC Phone, which it’s fair to say we’ve been keeping an eye on ever since we first learned about it nearly a year ago, has finally hit stores. The bad news, which is especially bad for anyone who couldn’t be bothered to read to the end of our headline for this post, is that according to a tipster living there, those stores are in Brunei. We just checked Orbitz for flights, and the cheapest one we could find to Brunei was $1,832 on Northwest. Moto still hasn’t said when the MPx might make an appearance in this hemisphere, but we can probably wait this one out."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/mtop_m-mpx.jpg" /><br /><br />MPx. 32 MB of RAM. Brunei. Must leave the room now.

Or, you can go to eBay and buy from several reputable sources. I'm expecting mine tomorrow! Looking forward to a pair of comptable bluetooth stereo headphones. Logitech?

I had to read that twice because I thought that was the price of the MPx. :duh: Or is it? ;)

For that price, I'd expect the PERFECT smartphone... with A LOT more RAM... that's for sure...

As cool as this device is, I don't think I could go back to even a 64mb RAM device after getting the 128mb in my SX66. I now install programs into main RAM with impunity and get a DEFINITE performance increase. It is nice to spend an afternoon surfing without running out of memory. 32mb is just so year 2000!

Honestly...with Moto's QC issues as of late I would be scared to buy one of these units right now.

with 32mb or RAM if I did not know any better I would say that is must be a Palm. That's pathetic.

Having seen this device for the first time at the CES, I could only come up with one word to describe it:

Eh.

I wasn't terribly impressed.

It's big, the keyboard is kinda weird, and it's unbelievably bulky. Plus it'll be stupidly expensive and doesn't have nearly enough RAM to be functional at the level I expect my Pocket PC's to function at.

As a phone, it's kinda neat, but I'm not looking for a really big phone with a marginal PPC right now. Considering what Samsung, Benq, and Audiovox are offering in the way of PPCPE devices, this one is a major disappointment.

The only thing that will save this device is if it shows up here with 128MB RAM... Otherwise, it's DOA...

What a shame...

I had exactly the same experience. After playing with it for a few minutes, I'd decided that really the only reason that it was considered a hot item was because of the two-way flip design--which really doesn't work that well in the first place. It catches a lot, and it's really just a fancy engineering trick. A nice idea, maybe, but not one that's incredibly servicable.

Bingo.

A good start.

They were too slow in pushing this out to the market.

When they first showed the device, it was innovative, it was one of is kind, and it showed promise. But moto dawdled while other manufacturers responded with their own devices, smaller and more powerful. SX66 is a good example, as is the XDA mini and the P50.

So moto's device just got overtaken before it even hit the market. Between this and Palm's OS6, I'd say this is pretty much par for the course (unfortunately).

Bingo. Remember we hadn't seen the "sliding keyboard" mechanisms before, and as such the dual flip seemed like the best option. But the HTC Blue Angel and Harrier devices have really redefined what a Pocket PC Phone can do.

This is typical Motorola, incidentally. They take way too long to release devices. My first Moto was a v8160, and it was about two years late in coming.

It's DOA in my book.

This company makes even OQO look productive. Ask Steve Jobs over at Apple... after waiting for an eternity for Moto (this was before they outsourced their cpu branch) to produce chips for their computers, dumped them in favor of IBM.

Motorola appears to have the habit of starting projects but not finishing them, making promises that they rarely keep. It's like they have a system-wide ADHD, never able to focus on any one part of their business long enough to be successful at anything (wireless phones would be the exception).

I'd venture to say that the MPx is not a wise buy, unless you have a stash of otherwise unused Brunei dollars, the Sultan owes you a favor, or you're itching for a day-trip during your upcoming malaysian holiday.

"not a wise buy" is probably a huge understatement. I can think of more apt words. I previously owned an O2 XDA - and the 32mB in a PE device was an absolute disaster! With further comments coming from those who have tried it at CES - I dont understand why anyone here would even think of buying one!

played with it
cool factor aside (the flip mechanism)
no good

won't even consider it
wouldn't consider it even for 400 euro

They day the V8160 came out it was, besides for its size, way behind its time, yet Moto touted that phone like it was the be all and end all. The only three Moto phones I've seen in the last two years that I would even want :

The MPX 220
The V3 (Razr)
The E398

I think Motorola really needs to refocus its efforts on what people want and not what some stuffed shirt in a board room thinks is cool. Working in the industry I have a perspective that most people don't have: from the inside. I see what my dealers buy, and they aren't buying Motorola while snapping up every single thing that comes along with the Samsung and Nokia names.

I'd say that speaks volumes for where the former number one handset manufacturer has gone.

If it shows up with 64MB I think it will sell. However, if it stays at 32MB it is indeed D.O.A.

I'm afraid that even the moto wireless department doesn't escape from their general stupidity. Their UI are missing that make you wonder what they were smoking. For example, for the E398 and V3, you can choose "skins" that change the appearance of the UI.

Unfortunately, the skins cannot be downloaded without some special third party software that unlocks parts of the phone, and can only be done through a cable. Motorola has not released a program for people to make their own skins either.

So imagine not being able to make your own PPC themes. Yep...it's stupid.

Is any of this really a surprise to anyone?

Do we need to revisit the MPx thread from Dec. 2nd?

What a bonehead blunder.

I will definitely be buying something else and during that time, will be waiting to see whether the right people at Moto will wake up and ship an MPx II one day later this year with all of the fixes/upgrades/enhancements that the MPx should have had in the first place.

Good luck Moto. You're gonna need it.

I don't know - I don't trust Moto - they never seem to gt things right the first couple iterations of product - see all the comments on the MPX200 and 220 - still buggy - whereas HTC seems to nail things out the shoot.

Don't get me wrong - I love the concept and design, but not Moto... I would feel entierly different if this were an HTC product.

If this were an HTC product, it would have been released to market within 3-6 months of information coming out. We have been talking about the MPx for how long now - over a year? It might have been a good device to have a year ago, but as others have mentioned, other manufacturers have since caught and passed the MPx on features and performance.

Given the limited RAM, ongoing delays, and the whole MPx220 debacle, I have no interest in this device anymore.......

The ONLY reason that this device might be tempting is it's the only WM PDA with a 'clamshell' design, which many of us have been clamoring for for a while.

However, as with all convergence devices, this one seems like a compromise. Not quite a real Pocket PC, not quite a real phone. Clunky to use either way you look at it.

Pass.

(C'mon Benq, hurry up already!) :)

Uh, 32mb is just too last millenium!! My Casio E-105 from 1999 already had 32MB RAM, that's S-I-X years ago and another millenium !!

Best thing is to get a good, simple BT phone, a BT headset and a 4" VGA PPC with BT. With Applian PhoneKing (http://www.applian.com/pocketpc/phoneking/index.php) you don't even need to take your phone out of your briefcase or pocket anymore !! 8) You can even make your PPC ring instead of the phone  :way to go:

that works out to what, $30 per MB of RAM?
