Many aspects of the UI and the software update discussions sound very good. The next issue for the community, upon release of the software, is availability of this new version of the OS for existing users of HP 4705 and such given the orphaning of HP 5555 which was allowed to be done by HP with no recourse by MS.

Let us hope that there is a strong press from MS to strongly encourage HP and other manufacturers to come to the aide of the end users and make sure the new OS is made available at a cost level which is reasonable given the investment in the hardware.

Well, my personal opinion is that the Dell X50 series should be upgradeable to the new OS, and I mean, Should. I got one round of OS upgrades on my X5, from PPC2002 to PPC2003, (though regrettably not to PPC2003SE). I am hopeful that Dell will do the same this time round, i.e. ship the X50 series with the new OS and release a user update for a nominal fee. Well, one can hope........

They state April 13th RTM so with MS's track record (Magneto was supposed to be out this last year dellllllaaaaaaayed ;) ) I would guess around June, which jives with past releases (Windows Mobile 2k3 was out last June, and the year before XScale Procs were introduced via the e740 around then as well) just an educated guess.

I really like the asthetic improvements to the UI. Will it be worth it for me to upgrade to a WM2K5 device? I'll have to wait and see...

My bet is 4th quarter 2005 before we see devices released running these versions. And I would not hold my breathe for upgrades being offered by the ODM's.

Just my thoughts...

I currently have the ultimate in design (IMHO), the IPAQ 4150.

As I have serious doubts HP or any other maker can recreate this design excellence in a new unit that uses Windows Mobile 5, or that HP will release an upgrade to existing IPAQ users, it looks like Windows Mobile 5 is something I will never be able take advantage of.

Sure would be nice if a third-party could release and support these OS upgrades to those of us who like our current units and do not see the need to plunk down $$$ for a new unit just to get the new OS.

For those of you interested, I managed to save one of the screens of the new Windows Mobile 2005 in action before Neowin took it down. You can see it here (http://www.wiggster.com/images/WM2005Sneak.jpg).

That's the problem OEM have not managed to overcome.

They're loosing sales big time; and possibly for a long time too.

They should make deals like "Buy XYZ now and get a free upgrade to WM05 when it comes out". They should know by now which of their latest devices can run WM05.

If they don't offer that kind of deals, lots of people will just stop buying new devices until they know for sure which device will get the upgrade, when and at what price or when newer devices with WM05 will come out.

I don't know what the fuss is over the screenshots. Based on what i've seen, there isn't much to look at. It's not like this is a radical new interface. More of a refinement really. :worried:

I think it's kinda weird how all new designs lately are nothing but gradients. I have nothing against them, it just seems that graphic designers are all working from the same book right now. I want rounder-looking graphics, not graphics that just show off smooth progressions of colors

If HP (or any manufacturer) comes out with a high-res 4100 type device with WM2K5 then I would definitely consider upgrading, but for now I will not go any bigger than the 4100.
