I haven't heard much discussion or speculation on the next version of Windows Mobile. Just curious.......will there likely be a new version in 2005? Would it be worth holding off on buying a new VGA PPC until a new version of the OS is released??

I do not expect a new set of pocketpc's for at least 6-9 months, at least from the major OEM's
Having said that, the new OS is supposed to be radically different, but then they say that of every new OS.

That's true. Hope WM2005 will indeed incorporate a lot of radically new/advanced stuff. Unlike PPC2k2/wm2003 (except for the code optimization)/wm2003SE, compared to the prev. PPC/WM edition...

wm2003SE
I think it's a safe bet that we're not going to see WM2003TE, or Third Edition. ;)
Anyway, I can't say much on this topic other than to say that Microsoft is hard at work on Windows Mobile, and I'm really looking forward to the next release. :)

You referred to the new version as WM2005. Is it really expected in 2005?
Anyone care to speculate what types of new features we might see?
I really hope it is more stable. I have to reboot my HP 2215 at least twice per day.

How's this for some gossip/conspiracy theory.
All the MVP's have bought Dell's, which only have 64Mb ram, but large roms.
There have been many rumours saying the new OS will make better use of ROM, making our devices resistant to hard reset by flat battery, and leave RAM free to be just ram, not storage.
They know what we dont, but cant tell us. Do do their actions speak volumes however???

:rotfl:
For the record, I don't own any Dell-based Windows Mobile devices. Currently, I own a 128MB RAM (yes, shocker, 128MB!) e805 and a 32MB RAM Samsung i600. And I don't expect either to be upgradable from what they are now, since they both were upgraded once. Therefore, I'm not sure what conclusions you can draw from that. ;)

Some time (it seems in the Autumn/Winter) in 2005. Or 2006...

Advanced Pocket Office apps, official 3D support etc.

That's caused by a third party program. My 2215 is pretty stable. It does need a soft reset from time to time because of the BT stack faults/3rd party prog bugs, but in general, works as intended.

I think you know, but just for the record, I'm not against more RAM. My point in those other infinite-length threads was that it's one of many variables to consider. ;) Heck, I have a gig of RAM in both my work and laptop computer, and I don't mind more (cost aside).

Ya, lets not go there 8) .
The point is though that the major OEM's have been reducing RAM and increasing ROM, and the rumour is that this is due to revolutionary change in the usage of memory that people think is coming in wm2005. Some people were expecting it to come in wm2003se, to coincide with the mpx, but this clearly never happened.
There has however been some architectural changes to memory usage between wm2003 and wm2003se, but nothing radical yet.
I hope it works out better than the treo and t5 NAND fiasco.

Maybe we'll see no ROM at all, and a nice 10 GB hard drive to replace it :devilboy: Now THAT would be nice! (although it probably won't happen  ) Maybe we'll see a better version of PIE and maybe the office apps will change A LOT so they're more like the desktop versions. :D

This would presume we have a clue what Dell is going to do. I can assure you, that is not the case. My X5 got upgraded to WM2003, but my X30 didn't get to WM2003SE, though it did get MP10 of all things. I've come to view OS upgrades as unexpected bonuses from any OEM. ROM based bug fixes I expect.
Personally I got the Dell because of the price. I wanted to see what the big deal on VGA was about. I got an X30m to see what SE was all about. This is somewhat of a hobby for me so I don't buy expecting to use this thing for years. I'm impressed by the clarity of the VGA screen, but not about the OS's use of it. I expect VGA to become the next norm. Now if we could just do something about the memory management and battery life. :?

Oh, No. If you had a 4G microdrive you wouldn't be wishing for the battery drain of a 10G spinning disk.
