View Full Version : Is there anything that can make PPC fonts look like Palms?

The palms have some of the best text, its nice and crisp, easy to read. On PPC even with cleartype its kinda blurry and hurts my eyes. Is there any plugin like there was for the clie? Also anyone know of any good icon sets for pocket informant. I've tried the 3D and VGA sets but they are pretty small and ugly. My palm agendus had better icons, i thought PPC was suppose to be more glamorous.

You can probably attribute this to two main reasons: (1) By default, the Palms have a slightly higher resolution than the standard QVGA devices (240x320), so text will appear slightly more crisp in that sense. VGA Pocket PCs (480x640) can provide better looking text, and no Palm has offered a VGA resolution as of yet. ;) (2) You may not have ClearType enabled which is said to improve the look of the text, especially on LCDs - go to Start > Settings > Screen (System Tab) and enable the ClearType option, and soft-reset your device.

I'd also add that palmOne screens are much more pleasant to the eyes because they almost completely lack the 'grid' clearly visible on a lot of QVGA screens. It seems the manufacturers of palmOne screens had better luck at making the individual pixels packed much closer to each other (I mean the barrier between them and not their size, which is smaller because of the 141 dpi resolution - they have nothing to do with each other) than with, for example, iPAQ 2210 and Dell Axim X5 screens, where the slightly darker grid between individual pixels is clearly visible, unlike with some other QVGA screens or palmOne devices. It's more of a screen manufacturing problem than the plain question of resolution.

Furthermore, some QVGA PPC screens flicker (as if they had low display refresh rate), especially, that of the iPAQ 2210 - that may also contribute to the otherwise excellent battery life of the device. I haven't ever seen a so badly flickering palmOne screen as that of the iPAQ 2210 .

No wonder one perceives a palmOne screen stunning, compared to e.g. the 2210 screen (and I haven't even mentioned the difference in the color rendition capabilities....)

i came from sony clie screens going from 610 (the first palm with 320x320 res), to NX70 to NX80 which had an awesome screen, but pretty bad font system with its hi res screen. The Tungsten has almost the "perfect" font. I'm not sure what its called, but many used a 3rd party app to change the clie fonts to the Tungsten one. For PPC the standard fonts is like that of clie, thin. Cleartype seems to just blur it out. I usually like cleartype on all my screens, but it just doesn't work when you are hold a device about a foot away from your face. It would be nice if i can find the tungsten font for PPC like for the clies. Too bad sony left the US market, their next palm with OLED screen sounds so awesome, if it had integrated phone, i just might look into it even if it was $1k.
