Merry Xmas to all.

Got this problem with unresolved items on my hx4700. It seems it won't sync E-mails with attachments.

WCESMGR.log contains lines like this:

2004-12-29 00:59:34 000001E0 - WARNING: Processing NACK: FromDevice: 1, [SSPId: 0x10008, Oid: 0x2000016A, Hr: 0x80140100, Flags: 0x00000002]
2004-12-29 00:59:34 000001E0 - Failed to sync a [Merlin Mail, 0, 0x2000016A] object because of error 0x80140100
2004-12-29 00:59:34 000001E0 - One Merlin Mail item [Vol: 0, Oid: 0x2000016A] flagged, SyncType: LOCAL_CHG

As far as I can make out it's unable to create the attachments on the PPC (Google turned-up someone with same error, but who was creating attachments on an SD card with write tab locked). I don't have the create attachments on storage card option set, btw, so it should be creating in main memory.

Would some kind soul check, with registery editor, the value of the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MAPI\AttachPath

and let me know what value they have there please? I think mine is right, but I'd just like to check in case I changed it. I think it should contain \Windows\Messaging\Attachments but I could be wrong.

Other than that, I'm at a loss and grateful for any ideas. TIA :D

You could go to www.cewindows.net which contains a lot of troubleshooting guides on Activesync.....

Yeah. BTW, did you notice Chris De Herrera has just posted a new article titled "ActiveSync in the Enterprise - Common Problems and Solutions" there? http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/activesync/activesync-enterprise.htm

JaapThanks, but been there, done that, got the Google T-Shirt after checking over 200 possible links and reading through them all.

MS really need to provide more diagnostic info about the reasons as to why an item won't resolve and they could start with a list of the error codes, descriptions and causes. I asked them for it, but I ain't holding my breath.

I was just hoping someone has had this problem and solved it. Getting that registry setting confirmed would be a start. Finding some way of looking inside the ActiveSync E-mail databases on the PPC would also help to perhaps explain what's going on.

I'm trying desparately to avoid a hard reset. I know it will work with that, but it's a real PitA to setup everything again and even then, there is no guarantee that the problem will not return in the near future. Bets to understand why it's failing and nail it, I figure.

Deleting and setting up the partnership again was not enough to fix it, nor was clearing out all the old mail from the PPC in between.

There is nothing on my PPC there. BTW, I've found something:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\AirSync\Settings]
"CalendarAgeFilter"=dword:00000004
"MailFileAttachments"=dword:00000000
"MailBodyTruncation"=dword:00000200
"EmailAgeFilter"=dword:00000002
"PeakDays"=dword:0000003E
"DeviceAddressingMethod"=dword:00000002
"CarrierConnector"=""
etc.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox\Attachments]
"BottomDir"="Mail Attachments"
"MiddleDir"="Connections"
"TopDir"="Program Files"

Thanks for the reply Menneisyys.

Been poking around the registry following your post and I have concluded that everything looks like it is set ok. I have been using WM2003 on my old 3870 for reference against WM2003SE on my new hx4700. There are some differences in the keys used, but overall it is very similar.

My current conclusion is that Pocket Outlook is confused about where to store attachments, but it is still not clear to me why. Like I said, all the registry settings look reasonable and all the appropriate directories and paths exist and are accessible (\Windows\Messaging\Attachments etc.).

If I try to create an E-mail message with an attachment on the PPC it says that I need to insert a storage card. The storage card is there, however and it is accessible. I even tried a different storage card (which works for the 3870 storing attachments there) as well as no storage card.

Whatever I do, going into Pocket Outlook Options, Storage tab, shows:

Main Memory (6889KB free)
Storage card (not installed)
Current size of attachments (0KB)

[ ] Store Attachments on storage card

... etc.

If I try to check the above box, it hourglasses for 30 secs and then doesn't let me move away from the tab until i clear the checkbox again.

Not sure how/why I managed to confuse Pocket Outlook about where it's attachments are, but it is definitely confused.

Well, I started with an ActiveSync problem and now it looks like a Pocket Outlook problem. I guess that's progress /:

Wondering whether to try getting the tweak program that allows you to set attachment storage locations to different places. Other than that I'm thinking, backup, hard-reset, check registry settings, restore, fix-up ... except I don't fancy that last plan if the setting is NOT in the registry! ;)

Going top answer part of my own question, in case anyone is following/searching this thread.

The Pocket Outlook "Store attachments on Storage Card" option requires that the removable media (MMC/SD/CF etc.) be identified (named) "Storage Card". SD Cards, for example, are mounted with a "folder" name of "SD Card" and are therefore not recognised. There is a registry hack to change the name of the removable media, which is documented here http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=1885&catid=80

I noticed that I must have already done this on my 3870 in the long distant past and forgotten about it, since the SD Card mounts as "Storage Card" and not "SD Card" as it does on my iPAQ hx4700.

That having been said, attachments work on the 3870/WM2003 and are stored on my SD card (using the hack), but they still do not work in any manner on my hx4700/WM2003SE - so I must have messed something else up ... something which is eluding me at present.
