i'm new to integrated wifi on ppcs

i'm encountering a lot of settings that i have no idea about, which are the important ones?

i've gone around the city trying to connect to networks (some are locked but some are open) but has been unsuccessful at actually getting on to the internet. most signals i've encountered are weak.

should i be using the odyssey client or dell's wlan utility?
should i get other apps?

any other tips?

thanks a bunch and happy holidays

The Odyssey client is not the best for actual 'wardiving' purposes because you have to manually refresh the list of the available AP's and it doesn't display their signal strength before connecting either. Odyssey is a great all-in-one program for keeping an easily manageable list of your protected/autehnticated AP's, however - much better than WZC.

Use WiFiFoFum ( http://www.wififofum.org ) for purposes like this. A word of warning: it doesn't support any kind of autentication/protection, so only use it for connecting to non-protected AP's.

You may also consider disabling WZC (the Wireles Zero Configuration) utility of WM2003(SE). It, sometimes, is a real pain in the butt and it DOES make the Wi-Fi connection about 8% slower (e.g., read my benchmarks about it: http://www.firstloox.org/forums/showthread.php?p=16858 ) because it always keeps looking for available AP's in the background, wasting CPU cycles and Wi-Fi bandwith.

I think Pocket WINC is the best of the bunch, but it isn't free :(

Wififofum is nice, but when I click on connect, it never connects...

Keep an eye on Wi-Fi Graph (http://www.kasuei.com/wifigraph). It's still in development, but it looks like it may deliver big things in the near future. Compatibility with some devices is a little lacking at the moment, but I'm assuming it will grow.
