Hi,

I need to buy a pocket pc urgently. But not sure which is the ideal one I should get. These are pricely items.

I like Dell's pricing but not sure its detail features and performance compared to HP iPaq 4700 which has strong features : VGA screen, 4" screen, 128MB ROM, Intel PXA processor.

Can Dell Ppc fans please advise is there such a comparable product from Dell than is lower in price?

Thanks!

If you check out the "Dell Pocket PCs" forum, you would see lots of postings referring to X50 series. The X50v is a VGA device. X50 series was released in November.

As drop has suggested, there is the X50v if you're after Dell's VGA offering. The iPAQ hx4700 wins in some areas, the Axim X50v in others.

The hx4700 is known to have a larger screen, so if you're after more screen space, that's one benefit. The hx4700 has 128MB of ROM (so too does the x50v); both have 64MB of RAM, but you can upgrade this at Pocket PC Techs if you wish. Battery life on the hx4700 is touted to be better, but you can always fit an extended battery on the X50v if you want to boost battery life. The X50v has its own 16MB graphics accelerator, so it goes one-up on the hx4700 in that category. Also, some people find the hx4700 touchpad to be an annoyance, but its really personal preference on that one.

The Hx4700 has 128mb of ROM... you can simply get a storage card to do the same thing... The Hx4700 is the same as the Dell x50V with 64mb of ram... you can upgrade either to 128mb for $200us through PPCTechs... or... you can just get a Loox... Asus.. or Toshiba...

Here is a basic comparison of all the current models and their features...

I don't know if it's still true, but I heard Dell had major problem supplying PPC in past. (Some waited over 2 month I heard. 8O )
So if it's urgent, you might want to verify that.

I think Dell got caught up on their orders. I ordered one a couple weeks ago, got an estimated ship date of a week later, and it actually shipped the day after I ordered it.

That was back in the day of pre-orders and what not when the new units were just announced. The new batch of devices have been around for a while now so I doubt you'd suffer much from the lag in supply. Of course, if you're in a country where the X50v is still awaiting release, or was just released, that's another story. Every region has their own supply source.

The real question is does HP have a PPC that can compete with the Dell x50v.

Thanks to one an all for the very useful views. I'll probably be getting a Dell X50v soon. Right now, I am comparing with palm-powered Zodiac which is a 3.8" PPC and meant for gaming.

Good question ;)

Screen quality-wise, the hx4700 is certainly a winner (along with the Pocket Loox 720). However, in some other things (RAM size, CIR, USB host) both machines are pretty weak.

Why don't you consider buying the Pocket Loox 720? It has a vastly superior screen to the x50v (just like that of the hx4700, except for the size - check out http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35630 ), 128M RAM and tons of other functionality (USB host). The only drawback is the 520 MHz processor and the lack of the 2700g.

The 4700 has the much more colorful screen, the x50v is faster when it comes to playing videos.
