It smells like a beanie. It works like a beanie. But there's something else to it. Something no other beanie can offer! Judie Hughes at Gadgeteer had a look at this beanie otherwise known as the Burton Headphone Beanie. Within each earflap is a Burton-branded speaker which connects to your media player (whether it be your Pocket PC or iPod) and delivers hard-pumping tunes right into your ear canals! For $39.95, those of you suffering the wintry blues can now keep warm and listen to music all at the same time. Personally, I'd have no use for it. I just sat through a hot and sticky 42°C/108°F day earlier in the week. The last thing I'd need is a beanie on my head. :P Regional climatic disparities aside - it was an interesting read nonetheless. So head on over to Gadgeteer to get the full lowdown.

Looks like they sell these at a local sporting goods store. I'm going to bring my Neuros over and try one out before buying. I'll let y'all know if I get one, and how it sounds.

Yeah, I'd be interested to see what the audio quality is like for a $39.95 outfit. The suggested 20-20,000Hz range isn't anything fantastic for the audio buff, but for makeshift use in the winter, I suppose it'd be a cool thing to have nonetheless.

The guys at Gadgeteer said it has great sound quality. Dunno whether they actually compared the sound quality to anything else, e.g., Grado SR80 (ok, that's a bit more expensive, but prolly the best value for its price). I'd buy this thing too (it's quite cold in here and we have to wear at least caps at least 5-6 months a year) but I'm concerned about the highs - even the thinest textile filters out most of the highs/bass (this is why I'm pretty spectical about this one), and in this cap, the speakers ARE separated from the ears by a textile layer.

Got one of these last year for snowboarding. There were more colors then. Sounds great!

Braved the crowds at Galyan's today and found the hat. Sales clerk had no idea what I was talking about and suggested I root around in the glove and hat department. Lo and behold, there it was. And it was marked down to $24.99!! Even better. There was one loose on the rack, so I pulled out my Neuros and tried it out. Wow, great sound. Good bass, not muffled at all for being enclosed in a little foam pocket. In-line volume control works nicely too. And the hat is warm to boot!! I'm going to give it a "field test" tomorrow when I take my morning walk.

I noticed that. The thing is, people's perception to sound varies considerably. 20-20,000Hz isn't bad for the average person. I own a number of headphones/earphones, and one of my favourite pairs has a frequency range of 8-27,000Hz. I can really tell the disparities in sound quality when comparing these two frequency ranges. But it's not everyday you find an audio beanie - so hats off to Burton for their efforts. :)

Wow! Nice find. Let us know if your morning walk is all the more chirpy. :)

Anyways, I showed the beanie to my friend and now he wants it badly... He'll probably get one after Christmas.

Good gravy! After reading the title of this post, I was half expecting to read something about robot sheep. Still, if someone makes a bluetooth toque, I'm all over it!

Pretty cool, very "A Close Shave"ish, but I was thinking of something more like this:

And before I derail this thread entirely, I'll say that I'd be kind of afraid to wear a hat with embedded earphones while doing any sort of sporty-type thing. With my luck, I'd hit a tree and have a bluetooth radio embedded in my skull. 8O

I meant to post earlier about my "road test" of the beanie. Today was a good day to really pay attention to its performance; the temperatures are around freezing and there are some stiff gusts.
My report is that the beanie is much warmer than I would have thought. The flaps completely cover the ears, and the earphones don't exert undue pressure on the ears. I listened to both music and audiobook today, and both sounded great. In fact, I heard some details in the music that I had missed up until now (previously I had listened through regular stereo speakers).
I give this beanie two unqualified thumbs up!!

Or two unqualified flaps up? ;)
Thanks for the insight welmoed. I'd be interested in giving it a go - if I lived in a polar region. :(
