Hi,

I'm getting an Axim x50v one of the next few days. I've been a palm owner since the PalmPilot 1000. I currently use a T|T3, but it broke and I'll be using the x50v for the next 3-4 week until it come back. Then I'll decide what will be my primary machine...

Anyway, I need some help finding the right software for this machine. This is what I'm currently using:

Can't live with out 'em:
PIM - calender/addresse etc - how does the build in ones compare the palm PIM?
Planetarium - star map that show the current sky and information in stars/planets/comet showers etc.
Plucker - for reading books and news
Yarn - for reading/posting to newsgroups.
Yaps - encrypted password storage

Used often:
Noah - english dictionary
PocketTunes - for mp3 and ogg files.
mmplayer - for video (doesn't use it that much)
pssh - for emergency server management.
unzip - for unzipping things download with the build browser
TextPlus - word suggestions when writing (is this build in?). English and Danish (made my own) databases.
Chatapus Jabber - IM client
Units - converts between different units
BigClock - uses it as stopwatch
Chess
Backgammon
Galaxian (is it worth trying MAME for PPC?)
FreeSolitari

I sync with outlook, but I'm guessing that it already does that.
I write notes, but don't need formatting, but spell checking would be nice (english/danish).
A simple spreadsheet would be nice.
An application that I could use to preview pictures on a Compact Flash card (from my camera).
Something to search for open WiFi networks.

Freeware is good, but I'm willing to pay (if the price is right and I do end up choosing the PPC). I've been looking at http://www.free-pocket-pc-software.com/ and http://www.freewareppc.com/ found some software that I'll take a look at, but suggestions would be very welcome.

PIM - calender/addresse etc - how does the build in ones compare the palm PIM? - I haven't used a Palm since Palm III b/w, so it's hard to say. Many people choose to get an add-on like Pocket Informant or Agenda Fusion, or at the very least a better today plug-in, like tAgenda or Pocket Breeze.

Plucker - for reading books and news - I think this works with the PPC doesn't it?

Noah - english dictionary - there's quite a few here

PocketTunes - for mp3 and ogg files - mp3's and wav's are supported by the built-in media player. For ogg you need a 3rd party program. Personally, I use Pocket Music, but there are several.

mmplayer - for video (doesn't use it that much) - Betaplayer, PocketTV, some built-in support

unzip - for unzipping things download with the build browser - Resco file explorer has this support I believe. There may be a freeware one too.

TextPlus - word suggestions when writing (is this build in?). English and Danish (made my own) databases. - I'm not sure about alternate dictionaries, but yes, some support for this is built in. 3rd party programs like Fitaly and Calligrapher may allow for greater dictionary customization.

Galaxian (is it worth trying MAME for PPC?) - Yes.

I sync with outlook, but I'm guessing that it already does that. - Yes.

I write notes, but don't need formatting, but spell checking would be nice (english/danish) - Pocket Word does this and comes with it

A simple spreadsheet would be nice. - Pocket Excel comes with it

An application that I could use to preview pictures on a Compact Flash card (from my camera). - many programs. The x50v has a photo viewer.

Another place to look is http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/

Npe, there's no direct PPC port of Plucker, but Vade Mecum will read Plucker docs on the PPC. See http://vade-mecum.sourceforge.net/ for more info.

My latest article on PPC-based image editors/viewers is nearing its end. You can check it out at http://menneisyys.freeweb.hu/PICVIEWERS ; however, if you don't want to read tens of pages, just get Resco Picture Viewer 5.1, it's IMHO the best & fastest generic photo viewer app.

Something to search for open WiFi networks.

WiFiFoFum ( http://www.wififofum.org/ ) is the best for this purpose.

Yeah, there is. Of the few, I'd prefer Total Commander ( http://ghisler.com/ce.htm ) because it's free. If on the other hand, you use SPB Pocket Plus 2.x, it contains a Pocket FIle Explorer plug-in that also has ZIP functionality.

GSFinder+ (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=34371) is well worth a mention too.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I've had it for five days now and I've written about my experience in my blog (http://blog.tc.dk/2004/12/dell-axim-x50v-part-1.php).

Hopefully somebody will find it useful... :D

Summary: I've tried a lot of software, some of it stinks badly, but I've managed to find things I can use for the most important things. Some of it's really cool (betaPlayer, pocket stars). I'm still looking for bit and pieces, but nothing important.

Is there a free alternative to WisBar Advance 2, that works good in vga?
