Interested in 4705, any reason not to buy?

I've had IPAQs since they started making them, and I really wanted to love the 4700 ... but I went with the Dell x50v instead.
I bought both devices and used them for a week before deciding. The touchpad is what killed the IPAQ for me ... and the price. It was way to quirky, and I was accidently brushing it just handling the device all the time, which would do all sorts of havoc depending on what was on screen.
Here are the threads I posted when I was trying to decide:

Depends what you are looking for... but the Hx4700 is the largest PocketPC available... it also has a touchpad... ??? Still trying to understand that... if I want to touch something I will touch the screen... seems that is why PocketPC's were designed the way they are.
The Hx4700 does have the fastest processor... and the largest screen... but overall... I am not convinced that it is even close to being the best device available. IMHO it would rank number 4 or 5...
1) Loox 720
2) Asus a730W (still to be determined not yet available... based on specs)
3) Toshiba e830
4) Hx 4700
5) Dell x50v
None of these units are perfect... but based on the total packages this is how I would rate them. Note that 2 of the top three are not available directly from the manufacturer in the US.
Here is a comparison chart... of the units...

I've owned 12 Palm/Pocket PC's and in my humble opinion, the 4705 is the best one I've owned. I compared the Dell with the HP side by side (only for a day) and went with the HP as it met my needs. Either way you can't go wrong.

If you're looking at VGA devices, remember there's a lot more to it than just the screen.
You need to consider the following, among other things:
• CF slot
• SD slot
• Battery life (perhaps support for an extended battery?)
• USB Host
• Camera
• Graphics accelerator
Things like that should all shape your decision. So going back to your original question, "Interested in 4705, any reason not to buy?", what is it you *actually* want in a Pocket PC?

I have a 4700. Best PDA ever in my opinion but there seems to be a problem with the backup battery sensor or something. My thread above may shed some light.

Touchpad!
I love 4700's screen so much, I can forgive its big size, hefty price, and smallish RAM. But, touchpad is horribly bad and never grows on me. If possible, give touchpad a try before you make a decision.

I was going to wait for the Asus730w but my 5455 just died on Xmas eve so I wandered into CompUSA to exercise my TAP that would expire next month. They offered me a gift card for the original purchase price or I could select any PocketPC in stock because of the price. I was going to take the gift card but then started playing with the hx4700. I was sold in seconds and now 2 days later, I couldn't be happier.
This device is not for game players! I only play games like Bejeweled and Mahjong, nothing needing a d-pad. This works perfect for me, so this might be a deciding factor for most.
Otherwise, with an extremely fast processor, a big screen, wifi & bluetooth built-in, VGA w/ portrait & landscape modes, and SD AND CF card slots this is one fantastic PocketPC if the price is ok with you.
Just my 2 cents.

I had a 3650 for 4 years & it served me well. The 4 inch beautiful screen is what really sold me. I also like the big std battery & even a bigger battery if I need it.
I love the 4700. Dell has a great price but the battery life & smaller screen stopped me from buying it. I use the 4700 all day long at work listening to MP3's as well as norman PDA stuff. Never ran out of battery yet.

I am also trying to find out which PDA is best for me here in the USA.
1. Asus 730W
2. Loox 720
3. HP 4705
Lets see, Asus has a HORRIBLE manufactuer's warranty, as I hear, ASUS never gives out RMA numbers easily, never can be reached, just like Averatec Computers, you have to wait for hours on the phone to get some service.
Loox 720 only has warranties that apply to Europeans and Asian nations, about the USA, well it doesnt apply....I have to send the unit to Europe to get it repaired.
HP, customer service, well I have 3 computers made by HP, and so far, their customer service is pretty good..24 hours, excellent.
Dell customer service is also good, but their VGA screen, as I hear is not as good as the HP's..
So one has to think, about functions as well as warranty, because if it breaks down, you better have some place that will fix it or else 600 dollars down the drain, if you are the unlucky one.

I too went through the same process a couple of months back. For me the lack of USA warranty on the 720 wasn't an issue (I live in the UK) what was a n issue with the 720 was the lack of 3rd part case support. Specifically it did not look like there would be an aluminium case available for the 720.
I was concerned that the 4700 would be too big, however I visited PCWorld (UK computer store chain) and held the 4700 - that was it. The device is so well made and sleek in your hand and the display is gorgeous. So I promply went home and order a 4700 online.
I now use it in a PDAIR aluminium case.
Hope this is of some help.

It should be pointed out, however, that
1, the 4700 has exactly the same screen color reproduction/contrast-wise as the PL720
2, compared to the hx4700/pl720, the Dell Axim x50v's screen may be better in certain cases, where "too constrasty" screens may be a big disadvantage.
See the thread http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35630 on this subject.

Nope, unfortunately. Of the current VGA devices, only the Asus A730(w), the Pocket Loox 720 and the Toshiba e830 have USB host.
