View Full Version : Why is Pocket IE so slow?

So I've got my hx4700 running in TRUE VGA landscape with Pocket IE and also trying MultiIE as well for tabbed browsing etc...

My wireless connection from my ppc to my Belkin wireless G-router works fine but what is bugging me when trying to surf is just how SLOW the pages load.

I've used Tweaks2k2 and have my Temporary Internet files set on my SD card.

If I go to http://news.bbc.co.uk it takes quite a while to load, can't be a slow wireless connection cos I can play Divx files in Betaplayer streamed from my Desktop PC drive no problems at all.

Any idea anyone please?

Thanks, Fedorov.

I've done the same exact thing you have done, and came to one conclusion. Even though Landscape TrueVGA mode is much better for displaying web pages, the time it takes to load the page is almost not worth it. I find myself not using TrueVGA mode for IE many times if I want to just look something up really quick. I'm not sure why it's like this, becuase it still has to load the same web page and should take the same amount of time. Just another thing they screwed up with IE... Hopefully that Minimo browser will be out soon and will include everything we've wanted.

I'd even be happy if ThunderHawk could support VGA mode. I mean, if a simulated 800x600 mode on ThunderHawk is capable on a 320x240 screen, that means... Wow, the possibilities for a VGA device and that program.. It's freaking FAST, too.

Have you considered using another browser such as NetFront? NetFront 3.1 with JV-Lite2 is a blast to use, and if you employ the VGA Brute Force hack in Tweaks2K2 .NET, I heard it's excellent to use. You'll have Java support, tabbed browsing, among other things. Give that a go - I'm not sure if it will fix your "lag" problems, but it's worth a try.

NetFront 3.1 with JV-Lite 2 can be found here. (http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=92931&sectionId=0&catalog=30&topSectionId=-1)

I might add that v3.2 has been out for a while now, but I'm still waiting to see when it will debut on the Pocket PC platform. If you're curious though, there's more information about it here. (http://www.access-us-inc.com/Prod_NetFront_nf.html)

Hmm, when I applied the Brute Force to that, the font sizes and address bars got really screwed up. Any way around this?

In what way is it screwed up? I've never actually tried the Tweaks2K2 Brute Force hack so I've not seen it in action with NetFront before.

The address bar is distorted and takes up half the screen, so typing in a URL is almost impossible. Also, text boxes on web pages and drop down menus really screw up the page formatting. If those problems were solved, this thing would be amazing. It's REALLY fast.. Putting it in full screen fixed the address bar problem, but it still had the messed up text boxes and drop down menus. I love the zoom feature, too. It's a shame I didn't know about this program when I had my 4155...

Another approach for speed is to stick with PDA size websites. This is the BBC website that I use...http://news.bbc.co.uk/low/english/pda/. Many others are available here http://www.newkreation.com/mobilelinks.htm

I'm using my hx4705 with SE_VGA and MultiIE and I don't have any of the speed issues being described here while surfing the web with my wireless network.

In fact it works great for me. Well enough that I rarely use my regular PC when home.

If I go to http://news.bbc.co.uk it takes quite a while to load...
I just tried that site myself and it took about 5-7 seconds for the page layout with all the texts and links to show and then another 5-7 seconds to fully load all of the pictures and ads.

Thanks for the suggestion - just tried NetFront 3.1 with the Tweak2k2 VGA Brute force to get the fonts looking nice and clear and WOW huge speed difference over PocketIE, the JustFit mode works beautiful as well - just need a fix for the HUGE addressbar issues - hopefully v3.2 will solve this?

I'll wait for a fully working v3.2 before I purchase it.

I'd assume they would with so many VGA and/or QVGA WM2003SE devices out there in the market. I'm waiting on a response back from the developers as to when v3.2 will be released on the Pocket PC. Fingers crossed - hopefully, soon. ;)

As a speed comparison it took my old 3835 with a 200mhz processor 20 seconds to completely download the BBC main webpage. Now I know that a 624mhz 4700 is twice as fast....I thought it might be faster but 2x is OK.
