Embedded audio *lost* from notes

I frequently record audio in my notes (mostly using the default notes program that comes with Windows Mobile). When I synchronize, the notes are synchronized with my desktop audio along with the embedded audio clips. I don't remember exactly when it happened (maybe after pocket informant, maybe not), but during the last few months I went back to some of my notes and realized that the embedded audio was gone.

Any idea as to what caused this? where they went? I hope I can find an old enough backup to restore them notes... otherwise it'll suck. As usual, my hatred for cr@ppy software like activesync grows daily...
