Ok so I bought a Dell X50v so I could go to the store and compare it side by side with the HP 4700.

I also asked people what problems they were facing with the 4700.

Just about everyone who responded said they disliked the touchpad.

Is there anyone out there that LOVES the touchpad? :?:

I went to my local CompUSA to compare my Dell with the HP ... and the display unit had been swiped!!! So now I may have to buy a 4700 to make the decision. Atleast CompUSA has relaxed their return policy for the holidays!!!

I am still trying to understand the concept of the touchpad... as it continues to be mentioned... is the screen not just one large touchpad...??? If you ask me it was a gimmick... that the marketing department came up with. Along with the cool futuristic looks of the new units... (can you spell ugly...)

Someone at Hp needs to be fired in their PocketPC division... they went from a promising line of PocketPC's to the ugliest unachieving line of units in recent history.

Even the Hx4700 with only 64mb of ram and without usb host capabilities and as you mentioned a "TOUCHPAD"... makes you question what they were thinking...

I am also not a fan of the touchpad. If you are using it under low lighting conditions, the tendancy is to press the left instead of down! Quite annoying, but the screen guarantees that I'll never go back to <gasp> Palm!

I don't like the touchpad very much - although I didn't like the old oval style Ipaq control or even the smaller square control on the smaller Ipaq's. As with the touchpad they have all been too hard to press the center button without hitting in a direction. The last one that actually worked for me was the original large round Ipaq navigation pad.

I DO like the touchpad. For some purposes (like web surfing and working with spreadsheets) it is actually more functional for me than the old D-Pad. On other forums there are other people saying the same thing. Overall it seems about half the people who own a 47xx like it and half hate it.

You do have to spend some time with it to get used to it and you will do yourself a big favor if you change the settings to better suit your touch - light handed or heavy-handed. But I found that once I got used to it I use it a lot more for navigating around the screen. 5 minutes of playing with it at the store won't give you a good sense of it - you have to spend some time with it and I guess some folk will never get the hang of it, but, for me, it's been worth it - again - there are some things it's better for than the D-pad.

One feature of it I especially like the double-function program buttons - hold them for a few seconds and they perform a second function - very cool!

The pad will not be any good for high-speed action-oriented gaming, but people are already working on game pad add-ons to solve that problem.
