Well I am finally fed up with my ISPs email service - it just does not offer what I need. I have also toyed around with a lot of free email services and found that none of them do everything that I am after (although gmail is close!). So I have finally decided that I am going to have to bite the bullet and pay for the service I want.

What is it that I want, you ask. Well, it goes something like this:

- IMAP access and web access;
- the ability to gather email from my other accounts and put them all in the one place;
- a service that will work on my PPC of course; and
- of course it has to be good value and reliable.

Some time ago I played around with Fusemail which seemed to be a pretty good service but that was when it was a free service. Anybody used this or any other service that might give me what I want?

I can highly recommend Runbox (http://www.runbox.com) - I have never had it go down, a gig of storage, a file storage area, aliases, IMAP/POP/web access, a "fast" text-only version for low-bandwidth situations, junk filtering, and very reasonable cost.

I'm in my second year of using them now.

The other alternative is Fastmail, supposedly very good.

I'm a big fan of FastMail (http://www.fastmail.fm). Free with additional options and services if you pay a small one-time fee. There are also other options with monthly fees if you need them. I believe all the things you were looking for are possible with FastMail.

I have also been looking for a good IMAP service, but want to be able to sync my folders w/ pocket outlook. I use myrealbox.com and am able to move mail between folders and delete mail on my PPC and it deletes on the server. Unfortunately, they seem to have too many subscribers and the service has gone downhill lately.

I have tried Runbox and Fastmail and their IMAP setup puts all folders as a subfolder under the inbox. I have a read many posts that explain that it is not possible to sync subfolders in the current verson (WM 2003). If anyone knows a way around this or knows of an IMAP provider that allows you to create folders on the same level as the inbox I would love to hear about it.

I'm also a fan of Fastmail (http://www.fastmail.fm). I've been using it for ages and it's very reliable. At the time I signed up, it was the only webmail service I could find that had free IMAP access. It was also offering much larger mailboxes than the others (eg. Yahoo, Hotmail) at the time.

This is all changed with Gmail (htpp://www.gmail.com) though, which is offering more free space than anyone, and is starting to roll out free POP access. However, I can't get Gmail to successfully/reliably work with my PPC. So, until then, Fastmail will remain my preferred webmail provider (as I can successfully download my email to my PPC using IMAP).

Well thanks for the suggestions!

I had a look at the services suggested and liked them all, but in the end I decided to go with the "Full" service plan at Fastmail - for the price (US$19.95 per year) it seems good value and well worth it for the convience of an IMAP service allowing me to finally collect all of my various accounts from the one place and get that on my PPC!

Once again thanks for the suggestions.

I was having a few problems getting Fastmail (http://www.fastmail.fm) set up on my hx4705. Receiving mail was fine, but sending required some more fiddling. I wrote some instructions (http://speedcuber.blogspot.com/2004/12/setting-up-fastmail-on-wm2003se-ppc.html) in case anyone else was having the same problem.
