BetaPlayer (http://betaplayer.corecodec.org) is good for playing MPEGs, DivXs, and other formats. Otherwise, you may be happy with WMP for other purposes.

if i'm not mistaken, PocketTV is a good one, but can't windows media play divx files?

Nope. It handles MPEG files, not AVIs. Some people prefer BetaPlayer over PocketTV for this reason, as BetaPlayer includes support for both MPEGs and AVIs.

Windows Media Player can not play DivX files. It's limited to WMV only.

I second the suggestion of BetaPlayer, it's simply the best. As I recall, it will even play WMV files if the device has Windows Media Player 9, which the iPaq does.

many people have a hard time finding/getting to the betaplayer site. So i will give you the mirror link
http://www.exceed.hu/~picard/betaplayer/0.093a/
download "betaplayer.setup.UNSTABLE.0.093a.exe"
for plugins:
