Is this by itself or is it cradled/attached to a sync cable?

Some common causes can be today plugins (or other programs) that attempt to access the internet at certain time intervals.

Do you have any programs installed that make use of active connections to the internet or a network?

It could be. Sprite Backup does install a component which is designed to run on startup or at set time intervals to initiate a backup of your data. See how it goes over the next few days and if the problem is gone, I think it's safe to say that that is the cause.

Try uninstalling the version that runs on the Pocket PC and see if that solves it.

If you can, try hard resetting your device. There may be some conflicts with other programs. Otherwise, there may be a set of options in the Sprite Backup program that allow you to configure the automatic backups. But otherwise, you shouldn't be experiencing the problems you were originally having.
