Can someone be so kind as to briefly explain the number system of the various iPAQ models (assuming there is actual meaning behind the numbers). It is very confusing to hear the various numbers being tossed about.

I am in the market for one and want to get a better handle on this.

Thanks,
Pete R.

Honestly? I think they dump a bunch of numbers in a hat and let a monkey pull them out.

The only thing I'm sure about is that if it's got a 5 on the end, it's meant to be sold through business channels instead of retail. And I could be wrong about that. ;)

Pat, I love your response. Wouldn't it be great if Carly or some other HP bigwig would read it.

Most of the time, a higher model number means more features and a higher retail price. If you'd like pictures and prices, surf over here:

Keep in mind certain models might have or might not have a 5 added to the end of them. The 2210 is sold online and the 2215 in stores, but they're the same device.

Don't forget that there are Pocket PCs outside the realm of HP/Compaq! I'm a Dell fan, myself.

It depends which country you're in. Here in Australia, you would have struck gold if you found an xxx5 model. Most of the models sold in stores here have a 0 at the end.

Yes and I've been told that the -5 models are for US and -0 models are to be sold abroad. Who knows?

The last is correct. The xxx0 numbers are sold in europe, the xxx5 numbers are sold in the states.....

It's quite confusing actually - some of HP's new devices are sold here in Australia with the xxx5 numbering system, despite the fact that over the past few years, they've always sold it with the xxx0 numbering system. :confused totally: :P

That just means that australia has it's own way of doing things (as usual ;) ). They probably just buy devices from both product-lines as they please. There are sometimes technical differences: AFAIK, the 3715 does not have a camera, while the 3710 does....

At one certain point of time it was very clear what the types were.

THe first Ipaq was the 36xx series, it's successor was the 37xx, which was succeded by the more popular 38xx which was succeeded by the extremely popular 39xx series.

Then it became confusing and nobody understood it any more......

Nope. I owned a 3650 and a 3870. IIRC, it was more of a retail vs. distribution thing.

I am now convinced that they pick a bunch of numbers out of a hat, and voila - there's the iPAQ model numbering system. ;)
