<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.pocketcenter.de/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=602' target='_blank'>http://www.pocketcenter.de/modules....article&sid=602</a><br /><br /></div>Acer, who has quietly launched Pocket PCs in the past, seems interested in making a bigger splash this time (English translation of the article <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sourceid=mozclient&u=http%3A//www.pocketcenter.de/modules.php%3Fname%3DNews%26file%3Darticle%26sid%3D602">here</a>). They've lined up three Pocket PCs to be released around the end of this month (although it's not clear where). Check out the unusual styling:<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20041122-AcerN50.jpg" /><br /><br />Unfortunately, the picture is of low-quality and the image looks a little distorted, but it's still intriguing. Specs will apparently vary from a 266MHz Samsung unit at the low-end to a 520MHz Bulverde unit at the high end. It's not clear what kind of displays these units will feature. You can get a little more information from this <a href="http://www.mobinaute.com/mobinaute/article.php?id=20041120111420">Mobinaute article</a> (English translation <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sourceid=mozclient&u=http%3A//www.mobinaute.com/mobinaute/article.php%3Fid%3D20041120111420">here</a>).

Always good to see other companies maintaining the list of options.
As for the low-quality photo, it actually looks more like a Photoshop mock-up image as opposed to an actual photo. I smell drop shadows and a poor use of a foreground-to-transparent gradient

No VGA :( Why is there always SOMETHING wrong?
(Actually the only thing wrong with the Loox 720 is the pedestrian loox and lack of a flip lid). Still to be my next pocketpc.

A quick look at the specs and found "vga = nein". So none of these will have vga, sad, really sad............
Looks like the n50 isn't VGA:
VGA/Landscape Nein/Ja
VGA-> Nein, Landscape ->Ja
Shame because I would have considered this device. I'm still undecided, the loox 720 or the X50v? Oh god it hard

I'm just wondering what is making you undecided between the loox and the dell. I would have thought the loox is clearly superior?

The X50v is £40 cheaper. I'm quite tight on money right now  But you are right, the loox is a superior toy 0X

Here's hoping the specs are preliminary. That's one of the sweetest designs yet, in my opinion. I'd love to see a VGA screen on that baby. Beautiful inside and out.

Please explain....
Come on now you cannot go around making bold statements like that without backing it up. For me the Dell looks like a very sweet device - as does this one.
It is a pity it will not be vga though - that would rule it out for me.

Well, lets see.
Processor speed:
Loox 520 Dell 624 ------------------------------------------- one point for Dell
Memory
Loox 128Mb ram Del 64 ram ------------------------------- one point for loox
Size
Loox narrower, thinner, but slightly longer than dell ---- one point loox
Screen size
Loox 3.6 inches Dell 3.7 inches --------------------------- one point dell
Camera
Loox 1.3 Megapixel with flash Dell Nothing --------------- one point loox
Jog dial
Loox yes Dell No --------------------------------------------- one point Loox
IR
Loox consumer IR, Dell normal FIR ------------------------ one point loox
Price
Loox more expensive than dell -- ------------------------- one point dell
Battery
Loox 1640 Dell 1100 ---------------------------------------- one point loox
USB Host
Loox Yes, with included (small) cable Dell No ------------ one point loox
Video co-processor extra speakers and microphones
Loox No Dell yes -------------------------------------------- one point dell
VOIP hardware
Loox yes Dell No -------------------------------------------- one point loox
Software package
Loox wide choice from loox store (with voucher), Dell reasonable - one point loox
Looks
Loox OK, Dell stylish (I feel) ------------------------------- one point dell
If I add it all up, 5 points for dell, 9 points for the Loox.
It all depends on priorities of course, but the Loox has more functionality, and the battery life to support it. For £40 more I get extra a 500mAh more power, a 1.3 megapixel camera with flash to take picture notes with (although I understand there are some problems with this) and a universal remote. Plus using USB host I could easily attach a small usb keyboard or even better a 1Gb usb memory thumb drive. I already have all the software licenses I need, so the software bundle does not really concern me.
For your money you just get more with the Loox.

Just found this:
http://pdafrance.com/
274 Euro for a machine that has both bleutooth as well as WiFi, that is CHEAPER then the Dell X30 costs here and the machine looks better as well.
Only 350 for the 520MHz version with more memory.

Memory
Loox 128Mb ram Del 64 ram ------------------------------- one point for loox
Not quite. It's 128/64 on the Loox, 64/128 on the Dell. It's a matter of preference whether you prefer RAM or flash. I'd call this one even.
Camera
Loox 1.3 Megapixel with flash Dell Nothing --------------- one point loox
Again, I disagree. Many people can't or won't carry integrated cameras. Call it a draw.
IR
Loox consumer IR, Dell normal FIR ------------------------ one point loox
No. The X50v has consumer IR. Even.
VOIP hardware
Loox yes Dell No -------------------------------------------- one point loox
What constitutes 'VoIP hardware'? The X50/X50v has a combo headphone/headset jack specifically for use with VoIP. Unless the Loox has something a lot more special, I'd call this a draw as well.
If I add it all up, 5 points for dell, 9 points for the Loox.
The way I add it up, it's 5-5.

As the 128Mb rom (96Mb free) can not be used for a synchronized My Documents folder I dont believe it adds much that any memory card would not, especially with a dual slot device. 128Mb RAM however is much more usefull, and can not easily be added at almost minimal cost. To bring the Dell up to the level of the Loox you have to add another 64Mb ram at approx $130 by pocketpctech or some-one similar. To bring the loox memory up to the level of the Dell you have to add a 64Mb memory card. Arnt those free these days?
Camera
Loox 1.3 Megapixel with flash Dell Nothing --------------- one point loox
Again, I disagree. Many people can't or won't carry integrated cameras. Call it a draw.
I would not call it a draw, as its a feature thats quite useful, and as FSC is selling a Loox without it, if its an actual disadvanatage to you, you can still have a Loox without a camera. To add a camera to the Dell you have to add a CF camera at $65-$100 (cheapest on Froogle).
IR
Loox consumer IR, Dell normal FIR ------------------------ one point loox
No. The X50v has consumer IR. Even.
Ive actually looked this up on the Dell web site, as there seems to be a lot of variability regarding the reporting on this.
From Dell's web site (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?TabPage=techspecs&sku=5061YR&c=us&l=en&cs=04&page=external)
Port(s) Total ( Free ) / Connector Type: Standard v1.2 (115 Kbps) Infrared Port, 36-pin Cradle/Sync Connector, 3.5 mm Headphone/Headset Jack
and its not listed as one of the product highlights, as one would think they would.
VOIP hardware
Loox yes Dell No -------------------------------------------- one point loox

I did not know about the handsfree port on the Dell. The Loox has 2 speakers, one lower volume and specially placed so that it could be used as an ear piece. Of course both units have bluetooth, and could use a bluetooth handsfree headsets. I agree its even then.
If I add it all up, 5 points for dell, 9 points for the Loox.
The way I add it up, it's 5-5.
I would still score it 5 points Dell (which is still a fine VGA pocketpc) vs 8 for the Loox (which is just more feature rich).

Nope. Score here is Dell 1, for NOT having a camera and Loox -1 for having one. Some folks *can't* have a camera at all. That's why I am going for the X50v. I feel it is the superior device. But, your mileage may vary etc.
Of course, the perfect device has still not yet been produced.

Surely it should not just be one feature, but the sum of all features which dictates the superior device? Even without camera the Loox has got the Dell beat in a number of areas.

Sorry, a bit off topic but for the Loox lovers, TechnoWorld sales it for £356.55 inc. VAT.
This is the cheapest I could find in the U.K. At this price it is (almost) as expensive as the X50v.
They do international shipping too I think

As the 128Mb rom (96Mb free) can not be used for a synchronized My Documents folder I dont believe it adds much that any memory card would not,
For one thing, the internal flash is considerably faster than anything but an 80x memory card, and it doesn't take up one of your slots. For another, one could easily argue that internal flash is superior to RAM because it is not lost in a hard reset, does not need to be backed up, is nearly as fast as RAM for running programs, and frees RAM for program memory. If you prefer 128 MB RAM, feel free, but I hardly think it's reasonable to chalk it up as black and white.
Except that the cameraless Loox isn't available yet. Also, I don't think that there are that many people who find the camera that indispensible that it's a serious benefit. Again, if you like it, great, but I wouldn't count it as a big point for the Loox.
Ive actually looked this up on the Dell web site, as there seems to be a lot of variability regarding the reporting on this.
Not really. I have one, and I've tested it. It is CIR.

The x50v has a crap screen with horrible colours compared to the Loox(and any other VGA PPC for that matter).
The Loox can actually be USED for a fair amount of time before giving low battery warnings, the Dell on the other hand complains in less then 3 houres.
Those two kill it for me, that and it looks like a toy instead of a tool designed to help productivity.

Nonsense. The X50v looks fine, at least compared to the iPaq 4700 I have. To say that it's a 'crap screen' is just wrong, and at best is partisan attacking of another device because it's not yours.
The Loox can actually be USED for a fair amount of time before giving low battery warnings, the Dell on the other hand complains in less then 3 houres.
Depends on what you use it for. If you're not making a flashlight out of it, it will go far longer.

I dont have either.
My main devices right now are the Sigmarion3(screen res 800by480 on 5.1 inch)and the Sony TH-55.
I used to have a Toshiba E800 though and the screen on the new E830 simply kills the x50v.
The Dell´s colours are way too strong and dont show of the finer details, something you can check yourself by comparing the same VGA or higher resolution picture withn a lot of pixel level detail and colour gradients on both machines.
That being said, both are crap compared to the screen on the Sigmarion.
Oh and I got the Sony becouse it was the cheapest machine with both bleutooth as well as WiFi, that and to spite Ed.

Let me refrase that, lower gradients of a colour get edged out by thge stronger gradients around it so you end up with less detail thus looking at a softer overall picture.
Like I said, compare a high res highly detaoiled identical picture on the Dell and a Toshiba e830 for instancxe and you will see that the Dell is losing a lot of detail.

Next time I have another VGA PPC to hand I'll pop the same photo on both and compere them. Untill then, I have to say I'm happy with the Dell screen. My photos display as expected and the detail looks like it's all there.
