View Full Version : help: taking forever with Scanning File System

all of a sudden, when i wanted to check my backup history, the "Scanning File System" took an unusually long time - not long, but it took forever
i did check through Sprite's FAQ, and they seem to attribute the problem to corrupt files due to Pocket Inbox - however, i dont buy it, because even after i used the CleanMail.exe utility, the scan still takes an unusually long time
has anyone experience this before? i would really appreciate if you could tell me your work-arounds?
PS:
my system setup would be 128MB RAM equally divided between storage memory and program memory. i also have a 28MB flash drive (just like the iPAQ file store), a 512MB SD card (regular speed), and 512 MB CF card (high speed)

afaik this is normal behavior. This has always happened on my iPaq 5550 since I started using Sprite Backup 3.x and iirc it was responded to as "normal behavior" many times when it was asked about by others.

yes, im also using version 3...
anyway, if this is “normal” - what does one do when the “scanning file system” takes forever? do we have to do a soft reset then? also, if it indeed does take forever, how then do we get to do something, say change backup settings, etc., with Sprite...?
with all respect, frankly i feel that this doesnt seem normal - because you cant accomplish anything... and you dont call that normal...
IMHO...

I don't know about you, but my definition of forever is 90 seconds or less ;) In this case, Sprite Backup takes forever to load, but it's less than a minute and a half so it's not that bad.
What I do when I make a backup is I soft-reset the iPaq, wait for it to reboot, load Sprite backup, put the iPaq down and check on it a minute or so later, until it's loaded. And I'm always doing something else while I'm backing up the iPaq so it seems to take less time than it actually does.

then i guess there is something wrong with my Sprite - when i say “forever,” i literally mean forever... it really takes FOREVER...
thus, of course i cant wait forever is that i usually do a reset after ten minutes...
unfortunately, the reset doesnt solve the problem...
do yo think that having TOO much persistent storage, ie., flash, SD, CF have something to do with it?

I think that might be it. The problem is the display of all the folders within the structure they show to allow you to add/remove items from the system.
One thing I did notice is that if you use basic mode then this doesn't happen so if you just set up your exclusion list and then use that mode to do a backup?

You may want to fire up the program with the unit connected to AC, go for lunch or whatever and see what it's at when you come back. In advanced mode, there's an option to exclude persistant storage. Your's must have gotten unchecked somehow.
