View Full Version : How much memory SHOULD I be starting with?

After developing a big comfort level with Palm, I have jumped platforms to get some of the functions that were yet to be fulfilled. I acquired a Toshiba e800 and immediately did the upgrade to 2003 SE. So far all I have synced is the basic Outlook features, AvantGo, and one small word doc.
Here is the problem. Of my 126 MB of Memory, Storage lists 75 MB is in use with only 20 free. Even if I include the free program space my total is still only around 30 MB and I haven’t started loading anything really.
Is this right? Shouldn’t I have a lot more space? Did I screw something up in upgrading? What is the typical memory size on an “empty” PPC?
I'm loving this new world - just have to readjust my mind

Soft reset and see what you have after that...

That memory config is a little low. Since you said that you haven't really loaded any programs, I'd consider a hard-reset to see if this solves the problem. See how that goes and let us know if it works. :D

Hard reset did the trick!
Now I'm showing only 2.70 Mb used - that more like it...
Thanks :D

Zwingli,
One of the nice things about using a Palm is that file management is pretty simple; there is only one directory in the Palm's RAM, so it's easy to find things and to see where the big files are. On a PPC, it's a lot more complicated since files are all stored in individual directories. It can actually be a bit hard to pinpoint which files are taking up the most memory on a PPC. I had a big surprise with my 4155 when I realized that something (I wasn't sure what,) was taking up a lot of space in my PDA's memory. It turns out that the "cache" files from Pocket Internet Explorer were taking up a good 15-20 mb of memory!
A GREAT program for memory management for the PPC OS is MemMaid by Dinarsoft. (You can find it at Handango, etc.) It allows you to easily get rid of excess internet cache, non-functional file shortcuts, etc. It works well and is pretty cheap for what it does.
Good luck with everything! Your Toshiba is a great PDA; that 4" VGA screen really puts the standard PPC and Palm screens to shame.

Another great app for finding the RAM hogs: WIMR? (http://mypaq.net/mysoftware/wimr/index.shtml). It stands for Where Is My RAM and it is one of my essential apps. I just wish the developer would come out with a newer version (the older version works well on 2003 devices - it's running on my 2215)...

PPC works the same as 'conventional' PCs where there is a separate storage and RAM area. On the PPC it shares the same RAM space but works the same was as any Windows PC.
Actually, PalmOS uses the same theory although not many people know that. It uses the RAM (and now ROM) for storage of programs and databases but also reserves a certain amount of RAM called Dynamic RAM for running programs. These Dynamic RAM are set at OS level and cannot be changed by the end-user (unless you use a hack).
PalmOS file management is different. While many seems to think its just one big lump of files on the RAM, the files can be searched, filed based on creator IDs, app type etc. Similar to gMail's way of sorting e-mails where you can tagged the e-mails with bits of info rather than storing them in folders.
TMann, God I am stuck with QVGA on my MDA Compact! However the pixel density is higher on its 2.8" screen, its sharper than my h4150. Almost as sharp as my old t3.
