View Full Version : Gmail to Support POP3 (and Pocket PCs?)

There's good news in that regard: Google is in the process of rolling out POP3 support, which in theory should work just fine with the Inbox applet in Pocket PCs.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20041111-GmailPOP.jpg" /><br /><br />Apparently, some accounts already have this (although mine doesn't). Incidentally, it requires SSL -- but WM2003 and up have this built into Inbox, so that shouldn't pose a problem. If you happen to have a Gmail account with this functionality and have tested it on your Pocket PC, report back and let us know how it works.

From other sites, I've heard all GMail accounts should have this feature within two weeks. I currently don't have it on mine.

I'm sure if this will work with PocketPC Inbox since it does not allow you to define the STMP and POP3 ports. GMail is using non-standard ports.

Damn - good point.
My account is not set for this yet, but I was really looking forward to gmail on my Pocket PC.
I think WebIs Mail will allow you to set the ports - anyone have this and able to confirm?
If so then I think that will be my first purchase once POP is enabled on my gmail account.
I have tried to connect using nPOPw (which does allow you to use ports)
but I can't get it to work....

The ports Gmail uses are specific for SSL, if I'm not mistaken. I couldn't set the ports on my Smartphone, but selecting SSL was enough for Gmail to work. I just checked this with Inbox on my iPAQ 2215 and it gave the same invalid server certificate my smartphone did, but it does work. So just selecting SSL will do, no specific ports need to be specified.

The program they created didn't work for whatever reason. If anyone has similar problems configuring, I found the help page with all the settings layed out nicely here: http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13287
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server – requires SSL: pop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 995
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server – requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
Port: 465 or 587
Account Name: your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com')
Email Address: your full Gmail email address (
[email protected])
Password: your Gmail password

I love nPop and use it on my pc and ppc but is does not support SSL so it will never work. My job just made the switch to SSL so I can no longer use nPop for that account. :(

I don't think nPOPw supports secure SSL connections, which are required for the Gmail POP3 access.
update: I see Jason and I were trying to get the same message across at the same time. Same here: I love nPOPw, but lack of SSL will make me go to Inbox. Now why the heck didn't MS ever add a "Send/Receive All Accounts" in Inbox. Sigh.

No - 995 is the standard POP3 SSL port. It should work fine on your PPC.

I connected on my desktop using Outlook 2002. What I don't understand is the only messages it retrieved are the 310 "Gmail Team" invitation acceptance notifications I have....
h6315 GPRS using settings above > Logging on > sending and receiving > Disconnecting > "Message cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again."
Exact settings from Inbox: Accounts > Accounts > * POP3 > enter e-mail address > Your name, user name, password > Account type: POP3, Name: POP3 > Incoming Mail: pop.gmail.com, Outgoing mail: smpt.gmail.com, domain, tried blank as well as gmail.com > Options > next > outgoing e-mail server requires authentication: check, require SSL connection: check > next > finish > go back to message above > wash, rinse, repeat.
If anyone else is successful on a PPC let us know your settings!

You did enable POP3 on the GMAIL preferences, right? Not everyone has it and those that do still have to turn it on. If they haven't enabled it for you, it won't work.

It will be nice to have an official version and another way to get to GMail on a handheld. I'm surprised that you guys didn't know about the existing options though. I've been accessing GMail on my ASUS A620BT and my Zodiac 2 for several months.
You can download and install this PHP script and then access it from any browser. It works great on my handhelds:
http://gmail-lite.sourceforge.net/
For my Nokia 6820, I use the WAP access:
http://www.gmailwireless.com/
The cool thing about these is both support all the main features of GMail, so you can archive things or view your filters or whatever. I can't imagine how that will be possible with just simple POP access.

3 pages in and someone finally mentions it :P
I was about to make a similar post. Gmail-Lite has been working fine for me for quite some time now.
You can take a peek of it at http://gmail.pocketmatrix.com but I don't think Chris had time to fully set it up, but you can give it a go using demo/demo to login. I use a private server that works, and have to say, it's very nice.
Regarding the POP3 on Gmail, this feature has been in beta for some time now if you ever bother reading the "new features" page from time to time. It's my understanding that POP access is free during the beta process, however, like yahoo, there could be a fee involved later on when gmail goes public. I sure hope not :(

Its working through T-Mobile's My Email feature, onto my h6315. Also, apparently gmail is still desired among PPCT readers - I had 5 invite requests between my post earlier and now (about 12 hours). Thankfully I've been able to fill all 5, but am out now :(
Jon.
P.S. All Gmail needs now is to allow us to change the "From" header on emails, so we can use snazzy domain names we own. Yahoo! allows this, and is one of the only reasons I'm keeping it primarily.

From the gmail help site...(my account doesn't have POP yet)
Have you enabled POP in your Gmail account? We're rolling out POP access to all users in phases. Once it's available to you, a 'Forwarding and POP' tab appears on your 'Settings' page. You need to have this tab in your Gmail account before you can configure POP in your mail client.
I've just used gmail forwarding to a POP acct then been getting that via my PPC. Then in my POP acct I forward it to work. So get my gmail just about anywhere I go. Just an idea for those of you who haven't had POP enabled (like me).
Cheers!!!
BTW..if you want a free POP accout to use just drop me a line here...I have unlimited on my webserver.
Sorry I must withdraw this offer because somebody decided to start SPAMING with the account I gave them! 1200 returned e-mails in two days from the acct....
Sorry!

Here's what I did:
(1/4) e-mail address: ******@gmail.com
(2/4) name *****
username ******@gmail.com
password *********
save passowrd (ok)
(3/4) Account type: POP3 Name: GMail
(4/4) Incoming mail pop.gmail.com
Outgoing mail smtp.gmail.com
Domain (blank)
tap "options"
(1/3) [unchecked] connect and check every ...
Connection Internet
(2/3) [check] Outgoing e-mail sever requires authentication
[check] Require SSL connection
[uncheck] only display messages ....
(3/3) "get Full copy of messages"
I then get:
"Connecting..."
"Logging on..."
"Sending and receiving..."
Then "Inbox: GMail 0 Items."
with the following message
Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. make sure you are connected and that your emil account settings are correct Then, try to download messages again.
I've got it working on the desktop.
Any clues?
BTW I'm using a 4150

Since you've messed with it so much, just delete that inbox and start over on the Pocket PC. Your settings look ok but there could be something in the registry not right. Creating a new Gmail account on your PPC may clear it up.

Are you in INTERNET mode on your wireless connection?
SOmething else you could try is disable POP3 on Gmail's server for a few hours then reenable it.
Beyond that - I'm out of ideas. Make sure your 4150 is on the latest ROM, all patches installed, blah blah blah. :|

I'm having exactly (more or less) the same problems on a 2210. I've tried it a variety of ways over and over again, but still no joy. It's working fine on my desktop PC and Outlook 2002.

I just got POP3 access today, and it is great. I had a bit of trouble getting it to work on the iPAQ 4350 but have figured it out.
In the Incoming Mail field, type "pop.gmail.com:995".
This sets it to look on port 995, the port GMail uses. Voila!

I got Gmail POP3 yesterday.
Worked like a charm on my h4150.
Yesterday evening, I got the same error everybody else seems to be getting.
I think it's something with Internet settings, and the fact that I juggle between WiFi (at home) and GPRS via Bluetooth (on the road and at work). Any suggestions?

You don't need to do that. Just use pop.gmail.com.
By checking the SSL box, it also changes POP3 from 25 to 995 and SMPT from 110 to 4xx - whatever SSL SMPT is on. In fact, I don't think the mail.server.com:xxx works. I suspect you could change it to pop.gmail.com:123 and it would still work because the PPC ignores stuff after the colon and SSL has set the ports.

More weirdness.
When I send and receive my Gmail POP account on my h4150, it will send mail (I sent it to my work account, arrived just fine), but when trying to retrieve Inbox will give the "cannot be downloaded" error.
I am using the correct settings, with SSL, without colon/portnumber etc.
I really hope someone can help me figure out what is wrong, because my e-mail setup was finally coming together (mobile/web/home/work access to the same account).

I'm still suffering on this :(
I have an NTLworld POP email account working just fine on my 2210 (via my PC at work and on Bluetooth mobile). But the GMail POP account just doesn't want to work via either method. I've tried different settings, but no luck still. It just says "Connecting", then after a minute or so I get the "Messages cannot be downloaded" error. Meanwhile, the NTLword POP continues to work fine on the 2210.
I have got POP GMail working in Outlook 2002 on my desktop PC though. So halfway there at least...

mine works on my 2215. sends and receives just fine. Although i find it funny the once the email had been popped of the server it is no longer available to be poped off from anywhere else. ex. if i check email on my pocket pc and it downloads new mail. if i check again all the mail in my inbox dissapears. Or if i check from one pop client then try to check from another the second one says no mail. If i go back in to the gmail pop settings and reinable it for all email the next pop client i check with will get all the mail but like before none after that can get the mail that has been popped off once before. I assume it is designed that way, gmail is so crazy different. I like it. :)
I also think it's funny that when you pop off you mail you get AAALLL your mail, inbox, sent mail, labled mail... Doesn't matter. Gmail keeps all the email in a database then just marks it as "in" a folder. also very different and very cool.

Hmmm...... this gets stranger and stranger for me.
I've tried everyone's suggestions - thanks for those :D
But still doesn't work.
So, a friend at work has a 2210 also, typed all my own personal GMail settings into his PDA (same model) and it worked straight away !!!!!! No problems at all. So there's clearly no problems with the set-up at the GMail end of things.
Back to mine - typed in the same settings - still doesn't work. :bad-words:
So I'm double stumped now. Clearly I've set it up correctly on the Gmail side (because my settings work on another PDA and on my desktop), yet it won't work on my PDA. Meanwhile, to confuse matters further, the NTLworld pop email I have on my 2210 continues to function perfectly. This is all true for the via work connection and via bluetooth modem.
Any ideas anyone has would be very gratefully received at this point :(

Meanwhile, to confuse matters further, the NTLworld pop email I have on my 2210 continues to function perfectly. This is all true for the via work connection and via bluetooth modem.
Any ideas anyone has would be very gratefully received at this point :(
When I first got my 2215 I had all kinds of unexplainable problems with inbox. I knew I had the setup right. Some errors even came down to what I named the account. I eventually exchanged it to find that my new one had the same problems. I tested on my friends and all worked as it should. I continued to exchange until best buy was out of stock. others had returned some too. when the next shipment came in i got another exchange. That one worked perfectly. There appeared to be a run of them that had some kind of defect, weather it be rom image or hardware. but once i got one from a different run i was fine.
maybe you have a similar issue... dunno.

I've gome to the conclusion that Gmail on a PocketPC isn't a great solution right now for me. The beauty of Gmail is the ability to store ALL your messages for future retrieval. However, there is currently no way on a PPC to access any of your achived messages, at least for me.
I can only access new messages via POP, and as soon as I do a send and receive, previously received messages are removed from Inbox. If I set Gmail to download ALL messages, I get the unable to download messages error. I've only got 5 messages in my Gmail box right now, so it's not the size of messages that is an issue. Since PIE can't access the web version of Gmail, and since POP can't access "old" messages there isn't any way to get at all your stored stuff.
It will work fine if you just want to see new messages as they come into the mailbox. But forget about replying to a received message later in the day, because once you do another send & receive it's gone, never to be seen on the PPC again. Again, this wouldn't be a huge problem IF you could still access the mail via their web interface. Unfortunately we can't do that with our PPC's, so...
It would be nice if Google would add another setting to the POP rules - something to the affect of: Download all messages received within the last XX days, similar to the sync feature with Outlook. That would resolve the issue - since none of us really want to download a gig of mail to our PPC.

mine works on my 2215. sends and receives just fine. I like it. :)
You can tell the client (including Inbox on the PPC) to leave the messages on the server. That way, when you check on your PC, the email will be downloaded, and moved out of the inbox, not when the PPC connects.
This is how I do it, and it is great because in the morning I can pick up my iPAQ 4355, and check my email without having to get up. Then, when I do the email comes in on my laptop as usual. It's Great!

Where can you set that setting in Inbox on Pocketpc to leave the messages on the server...I don't see it anywhere! 8O

The option isn't actually called "Leave messages on server" like in Outlook, but when you are setting up the account, on the server info page, click options, then next until you see a drop down box (should click next twice). Select the dropdown box, and select "Get message headers only". I have the tickbox ticked, and it will download the first 5kb of EACH message. Even if the message is only say 2kb, the message will remain on the server so you can get as usual on your computer. Easy! Good luck with it. I find it really useful.

i clicked on the option "leave messages on server" and it still dissapears from my inbox in my ppc. it is very buggy. some mail gets lost. i have it downloaded to my outlook on pc and on my ppc and sometimes one gets the email while the other doesnt and like others have said, when you click on send/receive after you have received the emails on the ppc, all the emails will dissapear.
i have tried all the options but none seem to make it work very well.

Well, I've given up now unfortunately. :( Shame, this would have been perfect for me. I reckon my own personal 2210 won't do it. Because:
1. I typed my settings into a friend's 2210, then connected via his laptop, and it worked perfectly on his 2210.
2. Got a different friends 2210, typed in all my settings, set up a GUEST partnership on my PC, and it connected to GMail perfectly.
3. Then typed same settings into my 2210, and it wouldn't work - giving the 'Cannot download messages error'.
4. However, my NTLWorld pop email works fine on my 2210.
All of those circumstances don't add up to a logical conclusion - although I've retried them over and over again to double-check. The fairies don't want GMail to work on my particular 2210, and that's that it would seem.

I get the same thing on my PC, and I'm getting the same problems as others with the PPC (messages all disappear on nest send/recieve).
I may have acted too quickly, but I just sent out an email to just about everyone in my address book, asking them to change my email to my new gmail address. I want Gmail to be my default in outlook, but whenever I send/recieve it times out on the smtp server connection.

I have been using the GMail Pop3 function on my pocket pc for the last few weeks and it is great.
Last night I was at my school's award presentation night, and I had an ebay auction finishing right in the middle. I was able to connect up to my phone via BT, and check my emails so I could see how itwent. Its great! Almost like a Blackberry (well, maybe not as simple, but still great :D)

I noticed the problem of "disappearing" messages after doing another send/recieve. I reported it to Gmail. A few days ago it seemed to start working right, as one would expect (messages remain in PPC Inbox until I delete them).
Now its back to the broken situation. I'm not sure what the Gmail programmers are doing with POP...

Ok, don't know if anyone will ever read this, as this topic is now quite old. Anyhow, here goes:
I finally got my iPAQ2210 working on GMail !!!!!!! It took so...... long to work out what was wrong.
Three months earlier, I had performed a ROM update on my 2210, then did a restore. That was the problem. You ought not to do a restore after a ROM update. Whilst the restore might look like it has worked, you definitely lose certain functions. The most obvious of these is that you can no longer sign on to Hotmail, MSN, Passport etc. Hit that restore button after a ROM update (such that you are restoring a back-up made under an earlier ROM), and you can no longer use your iPAQ to sign into Hotmail etc. I'm not technical - it's something to do with updated security settings that get overwritten by the old restore.
*It stops you from being able to sign into GMail aswell*
So, I've had to hard-reset. Not do a restore. Sync my contacts, calender etc. Then both Hotmail (via internet) and GMail (POP) work perfectly. I'm now re-installing from scratch all my programs.
A right pain - but a solution at long last !

I don't have the same problem as you, but I haven't had it working right on my PPC yet.
I've known about not restoring from an old backup, so I know that's not the issue - and unlike others here, I've never gotten it to work correctly, not even once.
I've emailed the Gmail team about the problem with SMTP from outlook on the desktop, and the problem with all the messages disappearing on the PPC after doing a send receive. I never received a response

Here is what I did to get it to work. Doesn't work otherwise.
Also, with sending email I have to change the SMTP server depending on my connection. On GPRS, my provider is Optus and I use the server mail.optusnet.com.au, but at home I have TPG Broadband so use mail.tpg.com.au.
Good luck!

I want Gmail to be my default in outlook, but whenever I send/recieve it times out on the smtp server connection.
I have a related question regarding sending email using Pocket Outlook wth Gmail.
I use a mail alias (e.g.
[email protected]) that redirects to my Gmail account (e.g.
[email protected]). I would prefer outgoing emails to have the Reply-To field set to
[email protected] so that when people reply to me, that address will be what they reply to rather than my gmail.com address as the blah.org address has been the address I have used forever.
Currently, I have my PC installation Outlook set up to supply my blah.org address in the Reply-To field and have Autosync handle sending of emails from my Pocket PC. This works fine - emails sent from my Pocket Outlook account have the Reply-To field tacked on when Autosync sends the email vi my PC Outlook client.
I tried configuring my Pocket Outlook client to send email directly to gmail.com (without needing to use Autosync). Emails go out fine however I cannot see any way to set my Reply-To field. I have tried:
1. setting the Reply-To setting in my gmail.com Preferences. This works fine for mail sent using the gmail.com web client but seems to be ignored by Pocket Outlook-sourced emails.
2. setting the e-mail address to
[email protected] when setting up a new account in Pocket Outlook. Pocket Outlook-sourced emails just keep going out with my
[email protected] address.
Can anyone help me with getting Reply-To to be set for Pocket Outlook-sourced emails using gmail.com ? I'd really like to remove my laptop from the process for sending gmail.com emails using my Pocket PC.

Could someone please put the exact method for setting up pop/smtp for gamil on Pocket PC WM5?
1. Login to Gmail - then click on "Settings".
2. Select the "Fowarding and POP" tab under "Mail Settings"
3. Select your "POP Download" option ("Enable POP for all mail" is probably the preferred option), and modify any other relevant POP settings, and then select "Save Changes".
4. Next, open "Messaging" on the Pocket PC.
5. Navigate to "Tools" > "New Account..."
6. Step 1 requires you to enter in your email address - so enter in your full Gmail address in the format,
[email protected] .
7. Step 2 involves auto-configuration, so let it do what's necessary and then proceed on to the next step (Step 3) which involves your user information. Here, you should enter your full name in the first text field, your full Gmail address in the user name field, and your Gmail password in the password field.
8. In Step 4, select POP3 as the account type, and type in a suitable account name (e.g. Gmail).
9. The final step requires you to specify incoming and outgoing mail servers. Incoming mail should be pop.gmail.com and outgoing mail should be set as smtp.gmail.com.
10. Before you finish, select Options - here you should tick the "Require SSL connection" box and the "Outgoing mail requires authentication" box and configure anything else according to your personal preferences.
For the first time, you may get prompted with an invalid certificate. Ignore it - it should still work. Normally, I don't use Gmail POP, but I did test it out for you, and the steps I outlined above work perfectly on my device. Hope that helps.
Thanks Darius! But I still could not get the emails from the pop server until I uncked the box "Only display messages from the last [3] days". After that I was able to get messages but they are very old but not the recent messages.
On the Gmail web-site email settings, I have the following set under Forwarding and POP
1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since Jul 8
2. When messages are accessed with POP [keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox]

Sorry for the late reply.
If I recall correctly, there was one other user having problems getting Gmail POP to work with Windows Mobile 5.0. Let me look into it a bit more, and if I make any discoveries, I'll keep you posted.
