In another thread, we're listing our 6 favorite PPC applications. It's been an interesting read, but I'd like to know what programs exist that you have really found helpful / interesting / amusing...but the application rides under the average PPC user's radar screen. In other words, do you have a favorite application that probably not too many people have or use, but you find especially useful nonetheless?

For me, most of my favorite apps are listed on the "Top 6" thread. But one application I've used -- albeit with great frustration -- is Vito Technology's (http://www.vitotechnology.com) SoundExplorer. It lets me record in WAV or MP3 format using the PPC's microphone. I use it to record myself reading children's books, then I edit the resulting WAV files to create an MP3, which I load onto my kids' computer. They listen to me reading books during the day, while I'm at work. This works especially well since we're a homeschooling family, and the books I'm reading are historical-based stories.

Interestingly, I notice that Vito released SoundExplorer 2005 today (it wasn't even available via Handango this morning). I'm anxious to see if this latest version resolves the issues I've had with prior releases. I'm hopeful, very hopeful....

Your under-the-radar favorite?

Very interesting topic famousdavis. I hope you get a lot of responses.

I play the guitar, and I have found a couple of apps that have become invaluable. Chordster (http://www.biztekcomputing.co.uk/chordster.htm) is a guitar chord database that has thousands of chords that can be displayed on a fretboard so you can learn how to play them. It costs $14.95 at Handango/PocketGear. Also recommended is Perfect Pitch (http://www.fiftycycle.com/ppce.html) which is the best tuner for guitar I have found thus far.

Great way to pose this question. I rely on 'apReminder+', a freeware app that brings repeat alarm functionality to almost all apps on the PPC. I have it set to sound all alarms once every 30 seconds for 5 times. Makes it hard to miss an alarm. This in combo with 'apMemo' 1.0 (free) means scribbled reminders are always noticed. (I'm still running PPC 2002.)

I quite like Griff, which is a sequencer and sampler app. I get the idea they haven't had much success, but it's a really nice app that is great to have a bit of a play with when you have some spare time. Quality of the music and of the interface is very good. It is a battery eater though, so watch out.

My current under-the-radar fave is PocketWeather. At least until my next new app, that is ;)

I still like PHM Registry Editor - it's free, compact, and loaded with features. It allows me to do all the registry tweaking I want. ;)

WiFiFoFum, it detects WiFi hotspots, has a cool radar screen, and best of all, it's freeware:

I don't see it mentioned in software lists very often, but I use CLC Journal (www.crownlogic.com) a lot. It's not cheap at $39.95, but it syncs well with the Outlook journal on the PC and has good search functionality for finding previous entries. I've been using it for a couple of years, so I have a lot of information in it that I sometimes need to search through.

One I use all the time is VirtualCE (http://www.bitbanksoftware.com), which reproduces your PPC screen on your windows desktop, letting you use your keyboard and mouse for data entry. You can skin it, capture screens, etc. Excellent product, I use it every day, but rarely see it mentioned anywhere.

ScaryBear Status Ticker. It is a Today plugin that lets you display a large number of system type items (e.g. battery level, wi-fi on/off, last sync). Because it is a ticker, it only takes a single line on the Today screen.
