Since some of the early reviews were saying the battery life on the X50v were disapppointing I ordered an extended battery just to be safe. Jason did some pretty extensive tests using the 1100 mA battery that the X50v ships with. You can find that article here (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33593&highlight=x50v+battery).

I attempted to recreate the same tests that the original article did for consistency and this is what I came up with using the extended 2200 mA battery. The backlight for the standard test was at a medium setting, same as the original test.

Once my battery has recharged I will test the battery with the WiFi using the same web page.

Pictures of the X50v with the extended battery can be found here:

Thanks! Would you mind posting some pictures of the battery on the X50v? I'm curious how big it is and no once seems to have a good photo.

I think the standing.jpg and flat.jpg that I've attached may be what you're looking for.

Quite dissapointing.
How long does it last on full brightness with WiFi on transfering a file back and forth.

I'd rather see the battery life at a "comfortable" brightness level with wifi on while browsing and transferring files than full brightness - apparently the Axim screen is quite bright.

Medium brightness is actually very readable in just about any situation. As Jason said in the first test, if one really cared about battery life they wouldn't have it at full brightness.

Great post! How have you liked it? Do you play games at all? Does the D-pad seem user friendly? Does it seem solid to you?

I like bright.
White for me needs to be WHITE.

Yeah, that whole touch pad thing is what scared me away from the 4705. I loved my 2215 and I've had very good luck with HP replacing my mainboard for free, out of warranty. I almost bought another HP for that reason alone.

I don't like the D-pad as much as I did the one on the 2215, but it's usable. The only game I installed was SkyForce and it played ok. Then proceeded to totally freeze my X50v :( Had to do a hard reset to get it back since each reset froze 2 seconds after rebooting. I'm guessing that's what happens when you run a game not VGA supported.

The game didn't really play that different then on the 2215. The graphics didn't look as good of course since more rasterization was noticable on the VGA screen.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with the X50v. The screen is really sharp and bright. Although a little taller then my 2215 it fits well into my hand and is not too heavy, even with the extended battery making it 7 oz. I have a few quirks I'm too happy about with it but I think I'll get used to them.

The stylus is really a pain to get out of the slot. Maybe after I've had it a while it will come out easier. The nub that you have to pull the stylus out with is considerably smaller then the one on my 2215.

The buttons on the side are pretty annoying because I keep pressing them when I'm lifting the PDA off of the cradle. Of course the button's actions can be reconfigured but I don't want to lose the function of a button because of this. I remapped my Wireless button to rotate the screen.

Thanks so much for the info! I hope it works out with the x50v when it gets here this week because if it doesn't I don't have any more (IMO) options left.

uuuuum....what happens if i dont let the device charge for 8 hours before you use it? I'll tell you what...when i get home....ITS ON!!!! forget that charging madness....just me and my baby! I guess i can leave it on the charger while im messing around. but will anything happen if i use it before charge?

Yeah it will SELF DESTRUCT!

Seriously probably nothing major. Might shorten the battery life a little. But if it's charging while you're playing with it, shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry - I see that you said that now. I just saw "maximum brightness" in the test graphic and thought that's what was being tested.

The button positioning is both good AND bad. Good because it's more comfortable (when reassigned as scroll buttons) to scroll through text. However, being in "the right position" for that usage makes it the wrong position for not accidentally triggering the buttons... I'm not sure there's a good solution for this.

I put my battery in the charger for 8 hours, and the X50v battery-less in the cradle while I installed stuff. Worked fine.
