3970 locking up regularly after switching on

Well, after 18 months' reliable use, my 3970 (rom v2.10) is about to be thrown out of the window before too much longer, GRRRRR !!!!

i haven't installed any new software, haven't updated any of my existing software, but now very reularly (in fact almost always), it's just locking/freezing after i switch it on (if an application was open when i switched it off). pressing the power button after if goes dead just turns off the screen backlight, the display is still visible. pressing the power button does NOT bring the backlight back on.
Oh, and BTW, it's not just one app that does this - built in apps as well as my installed apps do this.
only a soft reset clears it, for a little while. i'm doing about 15 soft resets a day...

did a hard reset and a restore from backup, but not cured it.

any ideas folks (OTHER than splash out on the hx4700 i'd like!!)

Did you try using the unit after a hard reset but before the restore? That'll quickly isolate if it's a hardware problem (yes, I know you haven't installed any software, but there might potentially have been some corruption-style problem somewhere).

Thanks Janek, I hadn't but will give it a go.

in a way, hope not - thinking ahead to tedious-ville of having to laboriously install my apps one-by-one, with at least a few days of testing in between each.....

It may indeed be the ultimate tedium, but a "fall cleaning" is never a bad thing. ;) Besides, it's less hassle than if it were the hardware anyway.
