I'm wondering if there exists a program that would use the Outlook database to send my wife a text message alarm/reminder on her mobile phone? Here's how it would work

Wife would use either a PPC or desktop Outlook to make calendar entries and tasks. The program I want to buy would, when Outlook triggers an alarm or reminder, send a text message to my wife's cell phone. Wife really wants a reliable reminder that uses her cell phone capability. She's not interested in using her cell phone as a PIM -- too difficult to enter text into a cell phone pad. But if she could get some integration between her cell phone and our Outlook calendar, that would be a great solution...and save me the cost of a smartphone upgrade, too!

Although it is not Outlook you could use Hotmail/MSN Calendar (http://mobile.msn.com/ac.aspx?cid=uuhp_alerts). Then setup the SMS Mobile Alerts (http://mobile.msn.com). this can be done as long as your mobile phone provider is listed or you phone has an e-mail address. Then you can setup the Calendar to send out Mobile Alerts for items.

Lots of ways to get Outlook data into a cell phone, other than typing it in on the phone. There are programs sort of like Intellisync, specifically designed to do that. (try Radio Shack, or CompUSA for the particular 3rd party software). Some of the phone OEMs even have free software to do that, depending on the phone model. Nokia has such a thing. If the cell phone is BT capable, adding a BT dongle to the PC would likely provide that capability as well.

You could also get her a SPOT watch. That can pull Outlook appointments and send them to the watch.
