Shouldnt the title be "19.99 after rebates"?

anyway, I'd definitley grab this, but I was lucky enough to have a friend with an extra 1GB CF card.. and to think I spent $57.00 on a 256 card at the end of last year 8O

Ok, explain this rebate system you have in the US. What is the point of it? A discount is a discount and shouldn't it be taken away from the price when you actually buy the product?

Who gains by having customers send in little coupons - doesn't all the extra work of processing them cost money too?

A lots of folks are attracted by the rebate, but fail to claim, so it works out cheaper for the manufacturers.

So, the store where you made the purchase doesn't really have anything to do with this rebate business - it is the manufacturer?

Depends, sometimes yes, sometimes no. The point is people are lazy and forgetful and often don't follow directions very well, so many don't claim the rebate. So the company gets to advertise a price that is say $50 off, but since less than half (I read 40% somewhere) will actually claim it, it costs them much less, but they still get the increase in sales as if it was the full amount.

In other words, a way to swindle lazy customers :D

Do they actually pay you the rebate when you send in the coupon? Are they quick or does it take months and months?

In my experience I have always received the rebate as promised. It does however usually take 6 to 8 weeks. By the time I get the cheque in the mail, I have usually forgotten about the rebate. It makes for a nice surprise to find a rebate amongst all the bills :D

Just a word of warning, ya'll, my Kingston 512MB has gone back to Kingston, under their lifetime warranty. It's lost a lot of my pictures on my camera. I've also read that these particular cards have a higher-than-normal failure rate. Granted, if I send it in again and again, I will eventually get a new generation replacement, but this generation seems to have problems.

And, believe it or not, the instructions can be confusing for people not used to them.

For example, my mom got a PDF rebate form from Amazon. She didn't know she could just print the PDF as-is, since it had, like, print register marks all over it.

So she copied all the text and pasted it into a word doc, filled it out, and sent it in!!!! I really hope it doesn't get rejected because the instructions say to send it in with "this form", the UPC, and the receipt.

Hey, I hope you were able to recover the pictures using recovery software before sending back to Kingston!

Re: rebates.

Some companies such as Staples, FutureShop and TigerDirect are always dealing with rebates. BUT beware.. read the fine print.. most rebates are applicable to Retail boxed goods and not OEM products.. TigerDirect often make this mistake.

I am definitely NOT a rebate fan. I cannot believe the number of times I have sent in rebates (yes, sigh, according to the directions) and had them make up some garbage about missing paperwork. I used to always have copies of the stuff so it was not much of a problem other than the delay, but now I'm busier and want to fill out the form before I forget and I fail to make copies.

For those interested:

Kingston 512MB CF card is still on sale at ECost. http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=214758

It's $18.99 after a $15 rebate, and they charge $3.95 for "handling" (free shipping).

But it's not high-speed.

Has anyone in Canada ordered from these guys? (I presume they ship here) I hate the customs or UPS/FedEX "handling fee" that is charged for items that come from the US.

For those who have ordered, it would be good to look carefully at the UPC on the 1GB SD card compared with the qualifying UPC on the rebate form. It came out that the 1GB Compact Flash rebate form was put up for download at Outpost.com by mistake during the time of the order. A call to customer service resulted in an E-mail of the correct rebate form.
Hope this helps...
