I am currently moving from a Palm OS pda back to the PPC platform. I use to use a program for the the Palm OS called Daynotes http://www.natara.com/DayNotez/Index.cfm

Personally one of the best note taking software I have ever used for any PDA. It also has a good desktop counterpart that will allow you to make notes, archive notes and also search notes.

I was wondering if anyone happened to know of a decent note taking program that can be used for the ppc.

Thanks

You may be interested in PhatPad by PhatWare (http://www.phatware.com).

It, like the package you mentioned, also has a desktop counterpart, and you will find PhatPad to be packed with features that you will actually use.

ADB idea library is a good software. it has a treeview structure so you can keep your notes well organized, can record sound, has drawing mode plus its free

Also, PhatNotes from PhatWare is good. It has a desktop component that you can sync with and it keeps the notes organized into categories. I have a category for each of my direct reports and one for a personal journal, for example. I also have my person journal files password protected.

If you are looking for a free alternative... I hear that Tombo is pretty good as well... there was also a program called "Derago dNotes" that I liked. But Phat Notes and Phatpad would be the standards to be compared to. There are lots of alternatives... you will probably need to try them all to see what suits your needs.

I'm using Trenotes from fannsoftware. It works well, and has a nice PC App. The only downside to the PC package is that it doesn't synch, but copies the whole file. As long as you're careful and synch often it's not an issue.

Alternative to Microsoft OneNote (http://www.evernote.com/en/)

In early Beta. PPC interface not offered yet but is on immediate radar.

Not all functionality present since it is early beta. Looks promising.

I appreciate everyone's input and I have spent the last few days looking into each one the programs mentioned.

I have also found another program which in my opinion is the closes program to mimic Daynotes so I thought I'd post the name of the program here incase anyone else inthe future may be looking for such a program.

The program is called Journal Pro. It also has a desktop counter part and can be found on PocketGear.com. It's not as smooth as Daynotes, but is far closier to it than any other program I have seen for the Pocket PC.

I love JournalPro... but it is a journaling program... I don't believe it allows you to create notes. By the way there should be a new release out for it shortly... that will allow you alot more editing functions.

Phatpad is excellent. It creates very smooth cursive writing, supports 8x11 virtual pages, has email support, notes can be transcribed into text by calligrapher. One of the best and most used programs on my pocket pc.

If I want to be able to write on my PPC with my stylus (in my crappy handwritting) and have it transfered to text, do I need a Calligrapher program or something else?

I noticed "CalliGrapherŪ 7.3" from phatware. The calli/phatpad combo is $50 and wondering if this is what I need and if it is good.

The demo writing kind of looks like mine :D

Anyone know if you can use this to input contacts too?

Thanks

Calligrapher is a great tool. You can use it for any text input - it's just another way of inputting text.

The bonus is you get Pencommander with it - so you can create macros.

Phatpad is also quite useful. I prefer Phatnotes to keep, store and organize my notes but phatnotes is invaluable for quickly writing out a note.

With respect to recognition, it's quite good. When I write too quickly Calligrapher gets confused, but if I am deliberate and clear in my writing there isn't any problem. Being deliberate isn't too much of a slow-down for me.

ok thanks. I am thinking about getting it. My main use would be taking notes down in class. While I have a bluetooth wireless keyboard from Stoaway, I was thinking that sometimes I might not be able to use it.

$50 is a fair bit of money.

Definitely do an evaluation and see how/if it fits your needs.

Pocketinformant does a great job of organizing phatpad notes - better than phatnotes itself.

Take the evaluation periods and use the apps and then decide - no point in buying something you won't use.

I am confused now.

Calligrapher & Pen Office. They seem like the same thing? Is PO just for regular PC's.

Seems like I would just want Calligrapher (cheaper too).

I am installing the trial of Call 7.3 now and will check it out. Still would like some clarification on Pen Office. I don't have a tablet or anything.

Ain oit.
Almos:
AIM65
almjs
afros
almoi
almo5
own
almos
and check this one out: penis ???

so great, my program is porn oriented or something. geez.

I'm sorry, it's PenCommander - not PenOffice.

PenCommander allows you to create macros that will print say "Look at me!" if you just wrote "lam" and then circled it.

Calligrapher comes with PenCommander - if you buy Calligrapher, you get Pencommander - whether you like it or not ;)

Calligrapher isn't perfect at recognition - I get best results when I don't write in cursive.

I was just printing. I don't write in cursive.

It seems that when I write horizontally in a straight line, it does better. If I write in any other way, like a diagonal line, it does not work at all.

I can see it is not good for note taking, too slow and too many mistakes. My stowaway is best for that. Might be good for jotting in contact info or any other short sentence.

Whatever you find best.

It is true that orientation with calligrapher is important - it has a little option that allows it to recognize on an angle.

I did find that it took a little getting used to, but it's not for everyone.

I've also found that Fitaly (http://www.fitaly.com/product/fitalyppc.htm) is a keyboard type input method that is much faster after a little practice than a regular keyboard.

For general typing for school notes a foldout keyboard likely would be your best bet though.

yea, I am going to keep playing with it. If nothing else, it is worth it for small data entry. Even typing web urls and contact info on the little keypad sucks.

I am kind of nervous about bringing this w/keyboard to class. Feel like EVERYONE will be watching me :D I was playing with it earlier and simply love it.
