Ok... aside from the risk of running myself into the poor house... : ) What does this savy group of computer folks think about downloading software for online gambling? I'd like to play some poker on-line... But I'm worried about what I might be inviting into my computer.

Any Thoughts?

I don't support it, but I can tell you that I have a friend that does play poker online.

He seems to think it's fine, but I've never investigated to see how "dodgy" it is. Mind you, he has received quite a few "winnings" in the mail in recent months.

In my opinion, you never win with gambling, but if you really do want to play poker (without money involved), there are plenty of free games out there that you can install on your PC and Pocket PC. That way, you get the satisfaction of playing poker, but you don't suffer the possibilities of blowing your earnings.

Love it or hate it (and, please, let's not discuss that), online gambling is legal and a huge industry in almost every country other than the US and Canada. It's definitely legit, but I can think of better things to do with my money. ;-)

I actually got off the phone with my friend, and there are many measures employed to ensure that there is no online collabration, which makes cheating hard. So yes, it does seem pretty legitimate.

Too right! The sooner that VGA device becomes an economic reality, the better. :D

Thanks for your responses. What I was really wondering about is possible computer problems. Spam, spyware. That kind of thing.

Any comments on that?

It's something that's hard to say as I'm sure it varies from company to company. Mind you, and I hope he doesn't read this (*cough*), my friend's computer now appears to be getting absolutely hammered by something and I think my old Pentium 166MHz runs faster than his Centrino 1.7GHz at the moment.

If you're really concerned, you should give your computer a full scan for viruses (with updated virus definitions) and perhaps install a spyware/adware remover such as Ad-aware. (http://www.lavasoftusa.com)

Not to bump a topic that Jason isn't much fond of, I remembered this thread when I found a place that has exactly what Darius was talking about-- what apps have spyware, stuff like that. It's got like c-net type reviews and a PHPbb forum discussion and stuff, and online poker reviews (http://onlinepokercenter.com/rooms/)

While I agree with the admonitions of others on the gambling aspect (ok, its really because I suck at gambling) I think being able to play community poker for play money on my internet-connected ppc might be enjoyable. Does anyone know of a poker site that is ppc-friendly in either PIE or Thunderhawk?
