I was surprised to find that out, as last time I looked they cost well over $200, and it seemed not a good deal to buy one, better to get 512 MB cards.

For instance, at buy.com: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10360071&loc=101&sp=1

Sandisk 1 GB SD card for $74.95.

and http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10382184&adid=17073&dcaid=17073

Lexar 1 GB SD card for $79.95, but with $30 mail-in rebate. (Unfortunately, the rebate ends today, 10/9. ) I ordered that one this evening, hoping to get the rebate, but I don't know if I will. Although ordered today, the last day for purchase to get the rebate, it looks like the product is not in stock, it will be some days before it is shipped to me, and the receipt will probably show the shipping date. I hope they also put on the order date, and that will qualify me for the rebate, but I don't know.

I also looked at www.pricewatch.com, and saw other 1 GB SD cards for $70 plus.

At this kind of price, it really doesn't make sense to buy SD cards with capacities of less than 1 GB.

Okay, I admit I'm bragging, but--today I ordered a 1 GB Lexar SD card for $32.49, no rebate, free two-day FedEx. Unfortunately the deal is now dead... hopefully the store won't cancel my order.

I'm thinking of buying a 2 GB CF card to go with it.

I just followed this link and the $79.95 price appears without any mention of a rebate. I've only used Sandisk cards up to this point but am tempted to pay the extra $5 and pick this up for my Son.

But why don't you even tell us where you got a deal like that?

Yes, because the rebate ended 10/9, and today is 10/10, so the rebate doesn't show any more. I purchased on 10/9, but am still not sure I'll get the rebate, because it certainly will not be sent to me on 10/9, and the receipt will show the shipment/billing date. I hope it also shows the order date.

Unless you think for some reason the Lexar card is better than the Sandisk (I really don't think there's a difference, but some people do), there is no reason to pay $5 more for the Lexar. I did, hoping to get the $30 rebate.

Why are 1GB cards becoming so cheap now? :? I remember it being well over US$200 a while ago. Everything changes so quickly in the blink of an eye!

Maybe I missed the point of your original post. I thought you were saying the $79.95 price was net of rebate.

Not meaning to be snippy, but my reasons for spending the extra 5 bucks are my own.

I ordered the card at Chumbo.com, but as I said, the deal is dead. Monitoring the Hot Deals forum at FatWallet.com can often net you the good deals, though.

There's a big surge in flash memory manufacturing. Regular RAM prices were so low for so long, and demand for flash was rising so much because of digital cameras, PPCs, and other things, that many manufacturers switching production lines from RAM to flash. That, along with rising capacities, has prices dropping like a rock.

The other real reason is that SD1 spec cards with 66MB/sec throughput speed and other features are ready to come to market.
