Hello, I am thinking about getting the HX4700. I have heard that the video at VGA resolution is far from satisfactory. Has anybody tried video at this res? What were your results like :?:

great for full screen mpeg on pocket tv encoded at 320*240- not as good for video encoded at 640*480 for WMV, althought the standard QVGA sized video runs great, it's just a bit small (1/4th of the screen). pocket tv utilizes the ati chip and expands smaller files to full screen with virtually no noticeable loss.

Can you play wmv 320*240 in full screen? I tried all the options but my hx4700 would not play in full screen. I have no problem playing Pocket TV mpg in full screen.

Don't believe the naysayers. The hx4700 leaves everything out now in the dust when it comes to video replay.

Get your hands on a 4700 and install Betaplayer, a free program, from http://www.coredec.com Full screen (320x240 and 640x480) DivX AVI, WMV, MPG and other formats with smooth, high speed play, beautiful screen resolution and color, and great sound. You need a dedicated DVD player, or full PC to beat this.

Will the Asus, Dell or other VGA pocket PCs beat this? Who knows yet, but the 4700 is as much better than my E-800 as the E-800 was better than my HP 2215.

My goal is to play the Xvid/DIVX files I have for my desktop PC, and play them without conversion to PPC.

Res would be VGA or lower (usually lower vertically, because of widescreen).

Datarates would be rather high - we're talking files of 30 mins and 175MB, or 350MB for a 40 min TV episode.

Would these play? Or is the CF/SD interface not up to this to begin with, let alone the ATI chip.

it works on the E800 (with 400mhz it's on the edge sometimes, but with little overcloking it's smooth) so should work on the (much) faster hx4700 too.

those 175mb and 350mb tv episodes we talked about are 624x352 or similar resolution with dvd like quality.

[EDITED]
The latest PocketTV should be able to play VGA-res MPEG's perfectly, as it has performances comparable to that of Betaplayer 0.093a on VGA-res MPEG.

This is a major performance improvements compared to earlier versions of PocketTV.

Actually beta player is still faster for me.
As for playing vga resoultion its fine as long as its not any of that window crap. The hx4700 can play the 1.7 mb/s 640x480 video with compressed audio @ 130% with beta player.
As for pocket tv beating beta player um, no. With audio disabled i about the same score, betaplayer slightly higher

That's correct, we have corrected our benchmark. It was caused by an incorrect configuration in Betaplayer. Yes, performances are comparable, with a slight advantage to Betaplayer.
