View Full Version : Question about encoding DIVX for the e800

I've recently figured out how to 'export' television programs from my Tivo into mpeg files.

I've also found the wonderful pocketdivxencoder (v 0.3.50) and betaplayer (v 0.04) and have been playing around with with various clips to test the quality on my e800.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to encode mpeg (or avi from DVDs, etc.) so that I can watch them on either my laptop or PDA. Obviously, 640 x 480 would be the ideal resolution to encode them into as that looks far better on the laptop.

However, the playback gets a little jittery on the e800 at full resolution (especially when rotated and zoomed) and I nothing I did could get the image to run as smoothly as it did at 320 x 240.

I'm writing to see if anyone out there has a found where the balance is between the highest possible settings that will run smoothly on the e800 and the best possible resolution.

Any suggestions?

Are you running regular win mobile or Second edition?

What bitrate do you usually encode at?

Well, I normally leave that to pocketdivxencoder but at a 'quality' of '60' at a resolution of 320 x 240 - it seems to be encoding at a bitrate of 920.

I leave the framerate alone and I think that leaves it at whatever the source was at.

Hmm yeah, you get a significant performance hit with second edition.

That seems awfully high, and probably contributing to the choppy playback (if you're encoding at same setting at 640 x 480 I'm surprised it runs at all on your e800!) I would definitely try a lower quality setting. For Xvid I normally use a bitrate of 200 to 300 kbps (320 x 240) and get excellent results. It's not perfect but is an excellent compromise between image quality and file size (for full-length movies.) I don't know what quality setting that is, since I usually am setting a target file size and let the encoder pick the bit rate.

If you don't know the bitrate for sure, then just let us know the size of a typical file as well as play length.
