View Full Version : Okay, Here's A Quick Question For You...

I was tweaking some of my Pocket PC applications today, adding a couple, deleting a couple, and so on. Every time I tapped on Remove Programs, I had to scroll and scroll and search and search, just to find the desired entry! I soon realized I must have WAY too many applications installed on my everyday Pocket PC.

I took a quick count and -- MAN! -- I have 72 entries! That has GOT to be the definition of overkill!

But maybe I'm not all that atypical... How many entries do YOU have in your Remove Programs list?

I have got 20 in my remove list although I have another 60 not on the list (most programs have been 'uninstalled' but still work straight from the memory card).

70 on mine that show up on the remove list and who knows how many direct installs and just the executable on flash cards (33 programs on SD, and 16 on CF card) guess I need to clear it out and start with what I actually still use!!!!!!
I have 40 on my iPaq 6315, see list below, but most of them relevant for my job, or at least the functionality of my PPC PE device (all LEGALLY puchased as well(!):

I didn't count, but, I have several that show-up on the list that aren't installed any longer -- and that won't delete from the list no matter how many times I delete them.
Why won't these damn things die????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been on a adding spree lately because I just switched over from the Treo 600 to my HP 2215 as my daily PDA. I might just need to get a stand-alone utility for adding / deleting programs to make sure all the errant code is mopped-up when I uninstall the programs that don't make the cut.

82 the final number. (Using about a third of them, but I like to have everything when it will be (once in a life) required). I had over 100, but did a clean up two weeks ago.

I use MemMaid for this purpose. I still need to do some registry clean up every now and then but it works fairly well.

I have 13. I make a real effort to keep things as clean as possible. If I'm not using it, I don't let it take up space.
61 in list plus 15-20 directly installed on card, plus as many CABs on card not yet installed; would be close to 100 8O.

I have 118 apps on my Pocket PC. However, only 7 of these are in my Remove Programs list. All 111 of the other programs I have moved to Stand-Alone directories both in memory and on my storage card (saving mucho memory). On the storage card, I have 48 games (\Storage Card\Games) and 41 programs (\Storage Card\Stand-Alone). In main memory, I have 22 stand-alone programs (\Stand-Alone) and the 7 programs that must be installed (I could not get these seven to run by moving the files to another directory).
This set-up makes it way easier to hard reset or upgrade to a new device!

I use Space Reclaimer. Even so, when I go into RegEdit, I find keys still present. I've been able to clean out files better using Total Commander.
I have 40 listed in the list. All do not appear in the list. I consider myself a software junkie and I try to stay on top of cleaning out apps that I no longer use.

But Ironguy triggers one of my Andy Rooney moments about PPC: Why aren't these alphabetized (at the very least), and why doesn't somebody write an add/remove applet replacement that has more functionality to it?
And why aren't they alphabetized instead of by load order?

If you're having trouble couting, count the # that fit without scrolling, and then count the number of "screensful".
I have 44, but I have PI4 and PI5 listed, along with the icon set, Pocket Slides, but also Pocket Slides Languages. Things like that. But, there are also a number of things that I've installed with a .cab file or whatever that aren't in the list.

I'm curious why most of you don't seem to use the ActiveSync Add/Remove apps functionality to get rid of programs. You can un-check a number of them to be removed and let it go. You don't have to do them one at a time like on the PPC. They are alphabetized there BTW. There is the occasional one that leaves a folder somewhere, but you are usually prompted about that. I'm sure some of you purists will say it leaves stuff, but I don't think that leaves any more than doing it from the remove programs applet.
Guess I'm a lightweight with 46 items in the remove programs list. I do have things installed that aren't on the list though...honest.

7.
That said, I benefit dramatically from having an HTC PPCPE (original T-Mobile version, but upgraded to 64M by the folks at PPCTechs). The super-flexible "ROM Kitchens" that the developers / helpful forum members at xda-developer.com have produced allow me to custom-design ROM images that include almost all of the apps I would want to install. Even so, I counted those up and found only 25 more. I guess maybe when it's your phone too you install less apps?

71 on the list in my Axim X5. 44 on my old iPAQ 3835, which I use mostly as a camera and for my kid to play with. On the Axim there are about another 30 or so standalone EXE things as well, not stripped-down installed stuff, but programs which are actually meant to run from one file. I keep most of those in the Built-in Storage area, except for a couple which act as system plugins as does apReminder+ for instance.
I use Remover for uninstallations, then I'll usually do a registry and file hunt just in case it misses something, which is rare. Been running around 70 installed programs on every device I've used as my main PPC for almost 4 years. Seems to be my 'magic number' somehow.

That is the question of handling them. 8) But really - I don't see any reason why they should slow down your PPC. Most of them (the typical apps/games) rest untouched in you momory / storage card and do nothing. The things that should slow down your PPC are permanent-runners like SIPs, Today Plugins, Wisbar etc. So there could be a PPC with 200 apps installed running faster than PPC with 10 apps. It all depends on the type of app. I can tell you that my iPaq with over 80 apps installed runs barely slower than in the just-after-hard-reset state.

That's the problem I have figuring out some of these posts with 100 apps installed. But oh well, that's cool if you do. Everyone is entitled to their own way of doing things. All that excess on there makes my head explode.

Many games, installed to the sd/cf card (Axim xX5), but still I actually do remove things occasionally. I begin to understand why activesync takes 45 seconds when I'm trying to install a new app.
As a previous poster said, I do prefer to have what I am looking for installed on the rare instance I might want it, rather than remember when I'm out somewhere at night, that if only I had Pocket Universe installed, I could tell the name of that bright star right there.

I just have 9 enties in my remove list basically because I find that most of the add on applications are garbage and way overpriced.

Only 28 for me... like many others though, I probably have dozens of other programs on my SD card that run directly without requiring additional installs.
Funny thing is that I seem to remember a similar thread (or was it a contest?) where we had to guess how many apps Ed H had on his PPC. His final number was lower than what most people would expect. I remember at the time, many of us compared notes, most people had less than 50 apps installed. Now that number has seemingly ballooned!!
I guess that says something about the growing attention being paid by developers to PPC apps!! There's just so much to choose from now!
