View Full Version : Why is my rx3115 so slow?

I didn't think much when I noticed my stylus target moved from corner to corner slower than doom 3 on a p2 during the screen alignment after just powering up my new rx3115, but when it took 3 seconds to load my programs menu, or 2 seconds to bring up my start menu, I started to wonder. Why is my rx3115 so slow?

I've put it through it's paces, and my 1945 seems just as fast, if not faster in some areas. Although irrelevant, games are faster on the 1945, be it emulation or native.

Some questions which may pertain to it's speed:

Does this new "Standby" tab in the power control panel affect my cpu depending on which way the slider is set?

Much like the last time the OS switched names, is any of this latency in the wm2003 applications I'm experiencing a side affect of non-optimized code? I remember similar experiences with ppc2002 was released, I'm *hoping* this is the case.

I have 1 more day before my return grace period expires. Overall, I'm pleased with the wifi and battery life. I'm not pleased with the bloatware 2003se incorporates, as I've got less RAM and a smaller File Store as a result. If I were to return this device, what would be a viable alternative within the same 350 price range? My primary reasons for purchase are battery life, internal wifi, and a good cpu, OS version isn't a big deal.

Thx

I seem to remember when we did the review of the 1945 that it had one of the best overall performance ratings of any Pocket PC at that time, especially in the graphics area.

I also remember something about it having a different graphics processor than everyone else as well.

Something to think about -- did the unit operate this same way when you first got it out of the box? Can you load some of the games to a CF or SD card? Have you shut off all other 'running apps' when you run the games?

It could be, also, that WM2003SE is 'worse' at memory management than previous versions, or, as you suspect, that the O/S is so bloated that there isn't enough room to run apps of any appreciable size.

the dell x30 at 624 will be a world of difference for you - and worth the money. hp compromised on the needed processor speed (and didn't even price the unit accordingly) so the problems you're having now you will continue to have. if it's bugging you now - it will probably continue to do so - so take it back and find a unit more suitable for your preferences.

Thanks for the interest Don, and yes, I tried a number of things, even with both devices side by side just so I could make sure it wasn't the Asahi making me think the rx3115 was slower than my 1945.

In any case, I seem to have nipped the problem right in the butt, and am actually getting the speed increase I would expect whem moving from a 249 ppc like my 1945 to a 379-399 ppc like the rx3115.

The solution you ask? Simple, a 4155 :)

20 bux more, but I get my form factor back, it looks less like a sony portable game system, and just feels much better.

You get what you pay for I reckon, but in some cases, like the 1945, you can walk away with a real deal.

My CC's are jam packed with old xmas bills, so on that note, I couldn't get the x30. I even went to the local dell store(?), and they're just a physical conduit to their website. They couldn't take my cash for the x30!

That said, I got the 4155 as an alternative. I'm a stickler for form factor, and the 4155 was a perfect switch from the form factor i'm already used to. Futhermore, I can't get used to those thin x30 stylii, reminds me of my old days on the jornada 545, anyone rememer those stlyii?

great choice - i believe the 4155 was one of the few to top the 1945's graphics performance and was only second to asus' a620 (which is known as the gaming extroidenaire -sp?). hp did things right when they designed the previous line of ipaqs - not so much this time.

Thanks! Much of my decision was based on the continual postive feedback I'd get during chats with Chris over from PocketMatrix. He never pitched it to me per se, I could just tell he really was happy with it, so away I went back to fry's to return the rx3115.

An interesting thing happened when returning my rx3115 at Fry's Electronics. I went in first to see if they had 4155's in stock, and just my luck, they had one left! I ran to the return line and waited about 20 minutes for everything to be sorted out, and upon returning to the PDA section, MY 4155 WAS GONE!!! I asked the guy if they had any in back, he said "No." I said, "But I asked if you could check, so you're telling me you can't check? I saw one..." He checks the computer, sees one is left, looks on the shelfs, sees it's not there, checks the computer which now lists the inventory at 0 :( He checks the computer to find that another fry's 20 miles away has four in stock. I drive down during rush hour to finally get there and see that a man just picked up the last 4155 box right before my eyes and walked off with it...

I asked the "dudes" (they seem to know it all don't they?), anyway, I asked them if they had any in stock, and to finally put an end to this story, he had one more in the back he hadn't put out yet :)

Oh yeah, both places had boatlaods of rx3115s, with 40% of them discounted returned models for 336.99 down from 349.99.

he just showed why! considering the hp alternative, it's no surprise the 4155s are disappearing that fast.

Too bad HP ends up getting a lot of retail sales by default.

I cut up my credit card. In a month or two I intend to pick up an Axim X30 or X50 off eBay.

That sounds like a good alternative, I know the x30 is quality stuff, and I'll most likely stick with it in the end. I reckon I'll follow suit with next year's dell for sure!

It's slow because the processor is slow. Check the review at PDAbuyersguide. The 300 Mhz processor (1197 CPU index) is slower than the 266 Mhz (1307 CPU index) on the 1945... Quite odd...

The rx3115 is my first Pocket PC (excepting a brief, one month tryout of a Viewsonic V36), I am coming straight out of the 90's after finally relenting to putting my Palm Vx aside - so everything seems pretty darn fast and feature rich to me  . I paid $200 for the V36 at Fry's and bought the $30 extended warranty - it wasn't such a hot deal and everyone was returning them due to the same problem. They gave me the rx3115 in lieu of my V36, not a bad trade for $200 + $30 warranty... I miss my little camera though.

I just cant complain about my new little iPAQ. The rx3115 has been running great for me - its smaller and lighter than the V36, has better graphics along with bluetooth and WiFi built in. Its certainly not a top of the line model and is probably over priced - but I think its a good little PDA - great, if they priced it $100 less.

congrats - looks like you got a great PPC for the money (230)! It's definitely worth that amount.
