Hiya
Do any of the new VGA pocket pc's have a 265k screen? Is the difference between that and a 65k screen noticeable? Wonder if the new dell will have a megapixel camera. Anyone know when it might be released?

None so far. Shame really since VGA can show 300k pixels. Of course its noticeable! I have seen mobiles with 18-bit displays and when compared to 16-bit mobiles there is a difference.

hmm, wonder why. Is it because of battery life? At least we dont get any "banding" with 65k like the 4096 displays.

I too am anxiously waiting for the 16-bit colour barrier to be broken. :-(

there is a huge difference between a 4k screen and a 64k screen, but the only device displaying 256k colors is the new mobile phone from samsung.
i cant say that the difference is huge, yes the display is realy bright and blending of colors is excellent but, to take advantage of the display, all the software have to be updated on a pocket pc.
so i cant say that i am dying to see new displays capable of 256k colors.
i find 65k enough for a ppc, besides the power consumption of the screen is much more important for me, since the display drains much more power from the battery compared to other components like cpu, ram etc.

LG has a phone edition out that has an 18 bit screen and again its useless since the OS doesnt take advantage of it.

Actually I was hoping for 32bit colour.... 8)

Who knows, maybe in the future we will see sth but I think we will have to wait at least a couple of years

come on! what will you need a 32k screen for?! dont you care about your battery usage?

There's always that W?BIC! factor involved. Having 32-bit would be very nice and pleasing for the eye. Besides, newer battery technologies are being developed and so give a few years and you may see 32-bit devices in the market where battery life is similar to what we have today, or perhaps even better.

Photos and videos. 16-bit doesn't cut it - many videos looks nasty right now on the Pocket PC. :-( I think 24-bit would be enough though...

But 32-bit graphics stil results in 24-bit color: the extra byte-per-pixel is the Alpha channel, and can't be used to get colors not possible in 24-bit.

Interesting! Well, that just reinforces the fact that 24 bit would be enough then, doesn't it? ;-)

Re encode vids for 16 bit colour(pocket DiVX encoder) and they look incredible.

Color banding in gradients with 16-bit displays are painfully obviously. Especially on larger displays (i.e. HPCs) or displays with higher resolutions.

so does that mean i will see banding on a VGA ppc that runs on 16 bit colour? I have to say on my NX70 which uses a 16 bit 320x480 screen i cant see any banding. Does anyone have any clue as to when we'll start seeing 18 bit displays in ppc's?
i think my next PDA is gonna be the loox 720.

It's only for images that have subtle gradients that you would notice any banding. Load this on your Pocket PC and see if it looks really smooth, or if you notice bands across the image:

I looked at those images on my Pocket PC, and I can see banding in both. Is one of them 24 bit and another 32 bit? The banding is present in both but more obvious in the second image.

Yes, the second is technically 32 bit, as it's a PNG, but there's no alpha channel. The amount of colors available in 24-bit and 32-bit are the same. If you want a TRUE 32-bit, check this out:

It should fade from the spectrum up top to transparent on the bottom. If your browser supports proper alpha channels on PNG, it should look like

If the two don't look identical, then your browser (probably IE) is probably displaying it fading to gray, rather than the blueish background of the forum.
