My device has the older WM2003. Can you buy/download 2003SE? Or do you have to rely on an update from the h/w vendor? I already asked them, & they were useless.

Unfortunately, no. Dell and HP have stated flat-out that they're not providing upgrades for their (eminently upgradeable) devices. Toshiba has, however, for the e800.

There's been lots of talk on here about this, if you want to do a search.

I have read most of those posts. but they all seem to deal with getting it from your h/w supplier. I wanna cut out the middleman & just buy the damn thing from Microsoft or a software store. Assuming I could get the program, would there be trouble installing it? Compatability issues etc?

It's not a "program". It's a highly customized operating system dependent on a plethora of different, proprietary drivers and applications. It isn't like Windows 98, where you install it and it picks out its drivers-- it has to be custom-built for each and every type of device. That's what all the hooplah about the device manufacturers not offering the upgrades has been about... they're the only ones who can supply them.

may i ask what is the reason for you to ask for wm2003 SE?
befoure reading the reviews and user opinions, i wanted to update to the new version like you do, but it seems that the new version has some negative points.

Installing an OS upgrade on a PPC is also quite different from a desktop. You must flash the ROM on your device, replacing the OS image there with the new image. The ROM is also where many of the OEM-added apps get placed as part of the OS image. Flashing the ROM replaces everything stored there. When a manufacturer issues an OS upgrade, it includes either a flash utility or instructions on carrying out the flash process. Once the ROM is reflashed, there is no going back unless you can locate a copy of the previous ROM image and the required flash utility. Flashing your ROM with an incompatible OS can leave you with A) a very nice paperweight, or B) a nice bill from your device's manufacturer for getting a workable ROM image flashed by them.

I know that a few people had thier 2210 flashed with WM2K3se at a recent show.

Can someone not get a rom image so other people can load it as well..?

Legal implications.. Well .. dont get me started on that one..!

just a thought

You mean, the from the MDC? You don't want that image -- it was highly beta, and in particular Bluetooth was completely broken on it from what I heard.

Well, I was more worried about software makers starting to release s/w that only works on SE than anything. But it would be a while before that happened, & it will probably be the next version, not SE anyway.
Also the ability to switch the screen to sideways sounded good, but i'm not worried about that anymore.Age of Empires only plays that way & it makes it hard to get the viewing angle right. Parts of the screen always seem to look washed out.

you dont have to worry about that for about 2 years , and in that time you will probably update your device which will run windowsCE 5
