View Full Version : Still Undecided... I Think...

The more reviews I read of the upcoming Pocket PC Phone Edition devices, the more angst I feel. On the one hand, it would be nice to have a single converged device. But, that involves compromises in size, speed, etc. Then I get to thinking about how I have just about everything I need with my combination of 4155 and Bluetooth phone.
But...but... that's two things to carrry around...
But... but... the Phone Edition is still kinda largish...
But... but...
Okay, people! Since I'm clearly too feeble to figure this one out for myself, why don't YOU convince me of what I should do?

I wish I could tell you, but I'm in the same dilemma. But what makes me think I will go and purchase a ppc phone edition is the fact that I really, REALLY don't want to carry around two devices anymore.
I have a handbag. Yet I am still complaining. So there.
Phone Edition it is. Just, which one???

But Brad,
If you went with a converged device, how could you justify your collection of Scott-E-vests to your wife?
Long live the PocketPC-Bluetooth phone combo!!!

I think there are still too many compromises with a converged device.
I'm definitely more of a PDA person than a phone person, and I want my PDA to be the latest and greatest -- 4" screen, Bluetooth, Wifi, two slots, lots of memory, and anything else they can cram into it. Even if a phone edition had all those features it would be too big for a phone, and features on phone editions always seem to lag behind anyway.
I don't care what other features my phone has as long as it has bluetooth so I can use it as a modem.
Since I'm female and carry a shoulder bag anyway, I don't find carrying two devices inconvenient. And like The Yaz said, I'm sure you're never without an e-vest anyway.
The other big reason I'm happier with two devices is that whether it makes sense or not, all the airlines still seem to prohibit the use of a anything with a phone in it, even if the phone part is turned off.

I'm a big fan of Phone Editions, but they're not yet where I want them. However, if you do go with one then I highly recommend a Blue Angel derivative, of which there are roughly ten thousand or so. They've got WiFi, Bluetooth (1.1, but with Headset and Hands-free profiles), an integrated back-lit QWERTY keypad, and (I believe) eight re-assignable buttons. Oh yeah, and a 400 MHz processor.

So, you're the kind of person who carries her Pocket PC with her everywhere?
My kind of lady!

A few years ago, I was in a staff meeting at the IT research firm where I work and my boss announced that he needed to find somebody to head up our research of wireless and mobile technologies.
"Anybody here feel comfortable with these technologies?"
As everybody around the conference table waited for his decision, the eyes turned to me. There I sat with my mobile phone, pager and Jornada with folding keyboard. No discussion was needed.

What I'm considering is a sort of wishy washy compromise, a PPC and a Smartphone. There are certainly those situations where I just want a phone, and the Smartphone is consistent enough with the experience I'm used to, to do most of what I would need, I think. It doesn't do everything, so having the PPC as well, when I want, would cover that. That way I don't have to compromise on the PPC, but would have the option of taking just a phone when that is preferable without feeling too PPC deprived.

I just returned my 6315, thinking that I really will be happier with the 4705/BT phone when it eventually comes out. The problem is that I'm now suffering from "connectivity withdrawal". :(

If I could get a Bluetooth Smartphone and Pocket PC combo, I think that'd be ideal. That way, I can pull up my e-mail with the Smartphone or use the full functionality of the Pocket PC.

IMHO, the best low/no compromise PDA/Phone will be the XDA III (insert whatever name variation you please here). I've had an XDA II for a while now and only missed the lack of wifi (or think I have since I've never had a wifi PDA). XDA III addresses that and then some, again IMHO.
Like everything though, it's all a matter of personal taste. Some people like to carry handbags, some don't. I know that I've gone back & forth between wanting to carry every one trick device I have in a backpack & carring everything I need in my shirt pocket. Right now it's my short pocket but who knows how I'll feel tomorrow?
Go with what works for you. Good luck.

What's everyone's take on the (unreleased) Moto MPx as a convergence device? Although it wouldn't be a power user's device, it is small and full featured. Supposedly it's being redesigned a bit to add more RAM and a larger battery.

not that I used it for a PDA but I had a treo 300, and (even without the flip part), there's just no replacement for a small phone. sold the treo and got a nice motorola to use if I need connectivity, but no more pda phones for me.
to each their own, though.
