I was thinking the same thing...... looks alot like my 4150! That could be GOOD! 8O
I am seriously considering it given the delays with the HP 47xx which I had my eye on.
Also buying a new machine each year can get quite expensive and Dells prices are much more manageable and the wait between the eventual appearance of the HP machine and the Dell hopefully is getting shorter as HP delays.

I've got a flaky Axim X5 that I'm just itching to replace. I was alomost going to by the X30, but I think I'll wait for the X50 now. That's if the price is reasonable...

If this thing is smaller than the hx4700 and is released soon, then bye bye hx4700. The similarity in shape with the 4150 has really won me here.
if these are the fcc docs for this device (https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/cf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=436164&fcc_id='NM8HC3UL') then it could be really close to release!!! they asked for a confidentiality date of 9/24/04. This thing could be close!!!

Oddly enough, mine is flaky, too. Could this be a quality issue? Don't get me wrong, I really like Dell equipment, but is shoddy workmanship the way they are undercutting competitors prices?

If the specs are correct then this will be my next machine. I will be replacing my X30 with this machine and giving my wife the X30. That will leave me with a X5 and X3i that I would need to either get rid of or possibly give them to my two oldest children.
I agree, replacing these each year is expensive, but with Dells it isn't too bad. I think though that this could be my last unit until I get a converged device that fits my requirments.

This is definately going to be my next PDA. I was originally excited about the hx4705, but after finding out it had the ATi video chip in it, I was less excited. I think the X50 will have the Intel Marathon 2700g chip, which at least is new. Other things I like are:
- Similar form factor and shape to my ipaq 4155.
- The cradle has a spare battery charger (unlike the hx4705)
- Looks like it has scroll buttons on the side. I would have preferred a scroll wheel, but it's better than nothing (like the hx4705)
- From somewhere else, I read that it has CCX 1.0, which are the Cisco extensions which hopefully means it supports Cisco LEAP which we use here at work.
- Probably will be cheaper than the $650 for the hx4705.
It doesn't look like it will be as durable as the hx4705 with its magnesium case, but that's an OK tradeoff for me.
Anyone know what that top nub or button is for on the top left of the unit? Is it a lanyard attachment point? Or is it another button?

Anyone know where the SD Slot is? looking at these pictures I can figure out if it has one. It might be at the top in front of the CF Slot, but I can't really tell.
I thought it was supposed to have both slots?

My x5 is also 2 years old. I haven't seen PPC since I got the x5 that I just had to buy. But the x50 is looking very much like my next PPC.

Well, I was gonna wait and get one of these buggers but I didn't for a few reasons. 1) I primarily use my PPC for multimedia, and that will suffer since the screen has to draw 4 times and much data. I much prefer overall quality to resolution. 2)Since the FCC cannot release any info about the device until Novemeber... it will be at least that long til it is offcially unvailed. 3) We all know how Dell is with shipping their PocketPC's. It takes a few months for them to not have them constantly on backorder. I am not entirely willing to wait until Christmas to get one a new PocketPC since I sold old one last month to a co-worker for a decent price. 4) The deal for the X30 that was posted on here last Wednesday for the final price of $265 for the 624mhz model was just too good to pass up. Granted both the 15% off and the $30 coupon are no longer valid..... but I jumped when I knew it was time to.

Yeah. If you zoom in on the high-res picture you can see a space for the SD card. It looks like it will be flush with the CF, right next to the headphone jack.

After looking at the leaked photos and specs of the X50, I'm leaning toward it to replace my HP iPAQ h2215. It will come down to whatever has the most features for the money -- the X50 or whatever HP is calling the 2215 replacement. I definitely want the VGA screen, Bluetooth and WiFi built-in and screamin' fast speed.
On a side note, I've replaced my Treo 600 with the HP 2215 / Sony-Ericsson T637 combo. The Treo is nice if you have limited needs, but I want as much screen real estate as I can fit in my pocket, WiFi, mutli-window web browsing and some more advanced user features that the Palm OS just can't give me. Don't get me wrong, the Treo 600 -- and it's rumored upgrade the 650 -- are sweet smart phones. They just aren't the handheld computer I need in my life anymore. Can anyone be mad at me for just wanting more in my life?
Anyway, as I consolidate my tech holdings, my eye is on the next generation X50 from the folks at Round Rock dude!

If the specs are as rumored (especially the SD & CF, VGA and dual-wireless) this will be my next ppc.
Slightly OT -- why aren't more companies doing dual flash (SD/CF)? I know it increases the size of the unit, but I see both as a necessity. Am I the only one?

hmmm whats the size of this thing again?
PPCT member jnunn calculated the size based on FCC documents (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32240&start=10) and determined the width to be 73mm/2.9in and the height to be 118mm/4.7in.
If this is right, it should be among the smaller VGA PPCs. (http://www.firstloox.org/VGAppc.htm) It has the exact same width/height as the Fujitsu Loox v70.

This X50 is really a piece of gem. It looks so good and practical. It is just a rebadged iPaq 4150, with dual slots! As from an edictorial article at Brighthand.com a couple months ago, HP abandoned the iPaq 4150 OEM design, in favor of their in-house design team. While new iPaqs have great technology inside, but they all lack aesthetical appeal. I suspect the OEM turned to Dell and offer their design where the new X50 are based on. (To be honest, I don't think Dell can design such an appealing machine, their product appearance design is even worser than HP.) If this is true, then HP has just made a huge marketing mistake. They under-estimated the success of the 4150 design. I see a reversal of market share in the near future. Also, the name of iPaq is so close to iPod, and everybody knows which name is more popular now, it confuses people and HP is marketing iPod right now. Another bad move. iPaq came out to the market first, I don't know why HP never pursued any lawsuit against the iPod name.

Depends on the price. The device looks great, but with a fully functioning X5 and several accessories pegged to that form factor, it really needs to move the value needle to get me to buy, rather than waiting until next spring.

I just bought an X30 high end for my son when it was on sale. I really liked it and was tempted to get one for myself when all this X50 talk started.
I'll probably be replacing my X5 with an X50 if the specs hold up and the price is right.

It looks like a lanyard attachment point to me, similar to the iPaq 1945's.
So X50 at least has one less button than X30. I like the wireless toggle button on X30. Hopefully this new X50 will have the Microsoft patented double press button design, so those four quick access buttons can perform as another four functions when double press quickly.
Anyone know what that top nub or button is for on the top left of the unit? Is it a lanyard attachment point? Or is it another button?

I have a few questions.
On the dual slots cover. If I am just using the XD slot, how can I cover the CF slot? Or vice versa.
I see two rubber legs on the top, I don't see any rubber legs or raised part on the bottm.
Does X50 share the same syncing port with X30? Hard to tell from the picture.

Mine's started doing that too. But I'm sorry, a device that's a little flakey but still fully functional after TWO YEARS of heavy use is not a sign of shoddy workmanship!
I'm wondering if I should try the newest ROM upgrade; the backup battery thing is supposedly one of the issues that's been fixed with the upgrades.

I did a check up on the button layout of the x50's internal vs the a730, and they don't mach up. Also, the new picture's of the x50, show that the CF & SD slots are slightlly differend.
Also, it's almost 100% sure that the x50 will have a 2700g gpu onboard ( and the internal picture of both the a730 & loox 720 show no space for this gpu ).
The loox 720's button layout does not match the x50's ( anybody can see that ).
People have been claiming to often xxx product is a re-badged yyy product becouse most new released ppc's all share the same specs.

I loved my X5, but went to an Asus because of the lighter weight, and better screen, however, with the specs listed for the X50, I'm *seriously* considering getting one of these....
As a side note, one fix for the X5 backup battery low notice is to put a small, folded piece of paper between the backup battery and the battery door to force better contact with the electrodes/diodes (?) whatever the correct term, it worked for us :)

Holy crap! 8O The iPaq 4155 pulled a phoenix!! Dell should have just named it the X4160
I want to be optimistic with this device but invariably the OEM’s always find a way to screw up some aspect of the system.
IMHO, a few hurls for Dell to overcome:
1. Don’t give me that yellow screen crap. Please Dell. Don’t pull an HP!!
2. Don’t make the device any thicker then the iPaq 4155.
3. Give us solid battery life.
4. Please don’t make the shell cheap. Give us some quality.
5. Is it that hard to provide a flip cover!?!?! (Not going to happen if the pictures are any indication though. :( )
If Dell can do those 5 things, again IMHO, we could have a iPaq thrasher on our hands and a PDA so compelling I’d mug my own mom for it. OK. Probably not. ;) But I would definitely be the first in line for one. Too bad there is no such thing as a virtual line on Dell’s site.
I really wish Dell would take a stab at retail brick and mortar stores like Best Buy, CompUSA, Microcenter.
-PS: Anyone want to take bets on if its going to have a yellow screen or not? :( I got the impression that the choice of screen for HP's models was HTC's decision (HTC being the designer and manufacturer of several iPaq models.) God I hope Dell lays the smackdown and tells them no yellow screen. :idontthinkso: :twak:

After 5 iPAQs never thought I would hear myself say this but looks like a Dell is in my future. After owing the 4150 and 2210, I just can't go back to the old days of the proverbial "brick" PDA. Looks like the x50 manages to cram just the right set of features into a case that looks much like my favorite PDA of all - the 4150. If Dell can deliver on performance, quality, and price, HP may have just made a serious miscalculation by abandoning the 4150 form factor/size.
PetiteFlower
09-16-2004, 08:22 PM
No current Dells have a yellow screen, so I have no reason to think that this one will be any different.
Dells also have traditionally had great battery life, though VGA is more battery intensive then non-VGA screens.
As for thickness, might be thicker then the 4150 but it doesn't look like by much. But it's got a nice curved back which looks very comfy to hold in your hand :)
I have to wait and see the price though....but either this or the X30 will be mine!
